“Em, I hate to be a nuisance.”
“But those long-beak birds are stealing my nuts.”
“Maybe you could speak to them?”
.
“Not me, missus, it wasn’t me!”
Mr Cardinal looked awfully fine in yesterday’s glorious sunrise which lit up the overnight frost.
He seemed quite regal.

.

Here’s the culprit!
Twice a day I toss peanuts down Scooter’s hole along with a sliced carrot.
Starlings go in after them!
.
It never occurred to me that a bird would enter an underground burrow in search of food.
How far in they actually go, I can’t say and the shape of the tunnel is also unknown.
The birds get their own supply of food but of course word gets out and before you know it there’s a mob.
One can only do so much.

.

Frosty mornings are lovely, but I had trouble keeping the sun out of my lens.

.
Standing behind a tree wasn’t too successful.

.

Going back inside and cleaning the kitchen window was a help.
It gets splashed quite a lot.
Aquarians are enthusiastic dish-washers!
(Oh no, not me!)
.
“Pretty tree” was beautifully back-lit yesterday.
For once I remembered to have the camera ready, as we sailed by.
Grant always moans “there’s a car behind us!”
Goodness sake, can’t they slow down for a nano-second?
The identity of the tree still unknown.

.

It was another splendid day.

.
Today turned quite glum by comparison and what a difference it makes, not having sun pouring through my window.
Usually it’s toasty warm till late afternoon.

.

But they can’t all be sunny days.

.
Because then they wouldn’t seem so fine.

I love your story, Carolyn, about the birds going after peanuts into the underground tunnel!
The tree is lovely! Never mind about its name!

Maybe you can install a lockable mailbox for Scooter and provide a key. You can then fill it each day with appropriate food!
What a beautiful sunrise photo! And I kinda like the photo with the sun shining through the tree — it’s almost like a work of art. Maybe you should put a scarecrow at Scooter’s hole!
I wish we had Cardinals here. I am always pleased to see them when you post photos of them. I don’t want the Groundhog to lose her nuts, so please try to throw them much further down the burrow. 🙂 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
