For Sunday a break from Fall foliage, although these photos will inevitably include it!
Anyone who’s been by here a few times will know about another of my passions…
.

Clouds.
Which, as it happens, provide the perfect backdrop for colourful leaves.
.

Especially dark clouds.
.

Clouds also allow for sun spots that travel enticingly across the landscape.
.

In summer, our view of route 372 is mostly hidden by a row of trees in the lower field.
This year the screen was quite dense. I don’t know how much those trees may have been affected by the summer’s drought.
.

Apart from climate, our trees are challenged by rapid growth of invasive vines, which is why we have the field brush-hogged in the Fall.
The process takes out the tangles without inhibiting next year’s growth.
.

Thursday’s rainstorm was slow in departing.
Tall clouds hung around the horizon for most of Friday.
.

Here’s that tangled field.
As the sun spots move about, the view changes drastically.
.

Spotlight on the cornfield.
.

A bit later, when the light moved again to those trees, they looked almost startled, as if they’d been caught with their pants down. So to speak.
As you can see, they have already shed quite a bit of foliage.
.

Without making any effort at all, I can find pleasing images every day.
.

Changing by the moment.
.

Even in dark shadow, the peak of hill house stands out.
It’s why I alternately call it the house of eternal light.
At night it is still lit up, which in some strange way is comforting.
.

The comfort I find perceiving that house brings to mind the feeling I used to have, so many years ago, flying across Asia at night. I remember looking down at scattered pockets of light and wondering about the people down there, obviously quite different to me, yet in most ways going about their lives in essentially the same way.
That, I think, is where the comfort comes from. The fact that we all have the same needs, light being crucial. Even the blind need emotional light, don’t they?
.

Left hand rainbow was more visible.
.

Clouds like this in late afternoon command attention.
.

Because they reflect the setting Sun rather nicely.
.

And, if you have a weakness for this sort of drama,
.

…it’s always a treat.
.
Mentioning eternal light brought to mind this poignant piece:
.
Realising that all people have the same needs is the very essence of humanity, and kindness. But I already knew you had both in abundance, Carolyn.
Best wishes, Pete.
Thank you so much, Carolyn, for the moving video of the Eternal Light! I love your passion for filming the clouds, the trees, and the sunlight seeping through the clouds over the sky, and the house on the hill.
Joanna
A wonderfully observant post, Carolyn, both in visual and written images!
Gorgeous.
I have learned from you to appreciate clouds in photos. You have a great variety here in your post (I always try to choose my favourite, but today it is difficult – each one is beautiful in its own right). And yes, I could see the rainbow in the first photo – that little piece of colour in an otherwise dark landscape is beautiful.
