A quick hour

0704/17th October 2024. It had the look of Winter.

.

Warm rays of the rising Sun turned overnight frost to vapor which soon dispersed offering a brilliant morning.

.

The bird baths were frozen over, but the ice broke easily when I bashed it with a stick. Too dark for photographs.

Later on, I missed a picture of Zoomer, the chipmunk appearing to sit on an iceberg, drinking.

Last night, he surprised me by staying put long enough to get an image of him perched on the edge of a seed tray.

.

“Where are you guys off to now?”

Tuesday morning we did one of those quick trips to the post office. I’ll put up a few of the pictures and leave you to decided how quick it was…

.

Trees look so lovely backlit.

.

Route 313 heads northeast into Vermont although we would turn off before the state line.

We had not gone any distance when we had to stop.

.

T0 enjoy the sight and sound of Canada geese.

.

.

Many fly south, but quite a few remain.

I look forward to the coming of their formations, in Spring and Fall.

Strangely, last Spring I saw none.

.

.

We decided to take a look at the river.

.

Fallen leaves were trapped by a small whirlpool that prevented them from flowing down the river.

.

.

Oh, those leafy lanes…

.

Two more beautiful horses.

But still I haven’t been able to pet one 🙁

.

The sky was clearing.

.

Which certainly brightened things up.

Crossroads. Which way to go?

.

The narrow road looked more promising.

.

.

It was newly surfaced too.

Many of our roads have been this year.

.

It led through a tunnel of gold.

.

Skid marks. Very common here.

.

“Stop!”

I yelled, noticing this view though a break in the trees.

.

Fall of 2024, decidedly red.

.

And dark orange.

.

One of the trees in the village which has been bright orange and quite spectacular in other years, this Fall looks unhappy although it seemed perfectly happy until now.

.

While I am a great admirer of trees, I know nothing of what affects their foliage, bar the obvious.

.

.

.

.

Short drives not possible in Fall.

.

Although this was comparatively so.

.

Trees with crooked limbs make a nice picture.

.

Back on the main road.

.

Pretending we were going home.

.

.

We found our way back to route 22 which goes past the veterinary hospital.

.

.

We followed the geese home.

.

Down a hill and around a corner…

We’d only been gone an hour.

A quick hour.

In union terms that meant when you worked 10 minutes of overtime and had to be paid for 60.

.

This is where geese often congregate.

.

Feasting on the green stuff.

Recently, I read that it may become a staple for humans, once we figure out how to extract the poison.

Another vegetarian option!

  1. It’s great to see so many Canadian Geese together. I can only imagine what it must have sounded like, because where they are, there’s usually noise. And thanks for the video of the river – it was nice to just sit and listen to the rippling water. Leafy lanes, horses, dear Zoomer … what’s not to love in your post? I can only add one last thing: I wish we had such a scenic route to our post office!
