Jaundiced

12th September 2024

.

This being a spectacular day, we stopped at a small park in Greenwich beside the Battenkill River.

A few days short of Fall but one can feel the change approaching. While the days right now are quite warm, at night the temperature drops sharply.

Indian Summer.

.

The air today is very clear and still.

Making for good reflections.

.

It was so peaceful.

.

Grant’s eyes are still able to focus much better than mine and he immediately pointed out some beautiful birds.

.

Mallards were having a lazy morning.

.

At least I think they were mallards!

As we watched, an osprey flew back and forth searching for an early lunch. But it was in too much of a hurry for a photograph.

.

Maybe one of those we saw last month.

That nest is not far off.

.

Another bird observed us from a safe place.

.

You’re a pretty white bird!

.

“White bird?”
“I’m an egret!”

.

Sitting where it was and bright white, I might have noticed it myself, but the grey heron was hard to spot even when Grant told me where to look.

.

While we watched the osprey, the heron did an about-face behind a fallen branch.

What beautiful plumage.

What an impressive beak!

.

The foliage started to change at the beginning of August which seemed really early but the progress has been very gradual.

.

It’s more a matter of the trees being less green than they were, with random bits of colour here and there.

.

Maybe it’s too soon, or maybe it’s just me, but I have a sense that it’s not as bright as it should be.

.

Do you see what I mean?

There’s too much yellow in all this.

.

Because we had to stop and pay the vet bill, we took a different route to Greenwich and found ourselves at the pond of the disappearing sign post.

.

That one right there.

.

This time there’s a shadow which explains the phenomenon.

It was more fun thinking it vanished.

Not that I really did.

.

As we passed the farmhouse, a car came up the road behind us prompting another of those sudden side turns.

.

This took us down to Hedges Lake that we didn’t even know was there.

.

We went all the way round and back to where we’d started, turning once more past Dead Lake.

It’s just as well we are never in much of a hurry.

.

Soon we were passing that pond again.

It still looked jaundiced.

  1. I love reflection photos — and yours are always so lovely. And then you are still fortunate with the sight of beautiful birds. We often see the egret when we go on hikes and the heron is a such a stunning bird. There’s definitely less green (and more yellow) in your photos today … but maybe you’re just in too much of a hurry for Autumn (I hope)!
