Beloved Friends

5th May 2024

.

Should I ever be confined to the sofa, I shall still have subjects to photograph.

.

Wet sparrows!

.

Our days recently seem to alternate between extremes of gorgeousness and down-pouring wetness.

On the latter sort, I move the birdseed trays onto the porch to avoid having the contents float away.

.

The hanging feeders are buffeted by the wind but the birds seem not to notice as they are too busy!

Cowbirds show off while a sparrow sneaks in to grab a beak-full before another bird pushes in.

.

Soggy days seem to cause a feeding frenzy, as snowy days do in winter.

.

A bedraggled titmouse continued its shuttle back and forth.

There seem to be two pairs. I think they nest in one of the nearby bushes.

.

The competition for food is fierce!

.

“Grosbeak food!Clear off!”
“Oh! Excuse me!”

.

“Husband, that was rude.”

.

“He’s usually much better mannered.”

.

He perched up on the feeder frame.

“Don’t tell her I’m here!”

.

Doves peck quietly on the periphery.

.

“I can’t see a way through here.”

.

“Alright, let’s try this.”

“If it’s not white stuff, it’s green stuff!”

Doves are sweet. They occupy a special place in my heart.

.

“This grass is out of control.”

.

“It’s just a little bit long.”

.

“Time for afternoon nuts!”

Through snow or grass, the wildlife paths are the same.

.

Squirrels are not above tapping on a window if they think their meal is late.

.

Little Red is not daunted by long grass!

.

The two previous photographs are identifiably Little Red, by the shape of her tail.

But I couldn’t get a good enough look at this one.

There may be two sets of Baby Reds.

.

After this morning’s torrents, lunchtime brought a bright sun break and I got this picture of Mrs Grosbeak.

Maybe a nice place to stop for now.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the most delightful post!! To start with, I love your grass! And the creatures
visiting the paradise that is your home are all beautiful but wet! Your photography, Carolyn, is so full of wet tufts of hair, that make your birds look gorgeous! Thank you!

  2. I love the titmouse photos – shame, those feathers stand in all directions. Wow, but you had many visitors … one would think they never get food! Lovely photos – I also like the doves (at the moment here are a few in our garden eating seeds that I just put out). I can watch them for hours.

  3. We recently had the pleasure to see a mum and dad Blackbird feeding a young one. When the food ran out, I put some bread on the grass for them, and the adults broke it into small pieces to feed the baby. It never even occurred to us to take photos or video, unfortunately.
    Best wishes, Pete.
