Cruncher

1700/19th April 2024

Who is the carrot muncher?

The groundhog. Well yes, but groundhogs chew and swallow.

Who, though, munches and expectorates?

It’s not as if the culprit dislikes the taste, else why would it keep chewing, and spitting?

Whoever it is has a fine set of teeth.

.

The goldfinch could no doubt enlighten me since it seems always on top of things.

.

Master Sparrow surveys the seed bowls with growing disapproval.

.

“We’re very willing to share.”

.

“But soon they all invite friends.”

.

“Before you know it, Bigfoot lays a claim.”

.

“Not to mention Squirly.”

.

“And all those big birds.”

.

“Only took one, Master Sparrow.”

.

“You’re alright Mr Cardinal. It’s those other ones with the starey eyes and long beaks.”

.

“You got issues with grackles?”

.

“Other birds respect me!”

.

“If they don’t, they soon get seen off.”

“Little Stinker!”

.

“Sorry Mr Grackle.”

“May we please have a peanut or two?”

.

“That’s better!”

“This is what we call manners!”

“A foreign concept to starlings.”

.

“Wut? Wut you lookin at?”

“Wa’s up there?”

“You teaching starlings manners? I thought the sky might fall.”

.

I try to spread food around.

.

“Yes, thank you missus.”

.

And to distribute it evenly.

But poor Master Sparrow and his flock are inundated with returnees.

.

Not to mention the furry friends.

.

“Remember how cool it was, back in December?”

“When it wos just us?”

.

“And one or two of our kind.”

.

“Everybody knowing the rules.”

.

“Coming and going without any fuss.”

.

“Sorry to say it Missus Sparrow, but we may have to move back to Hannaford’s.”

.

“Or at least to a more peaceful neighbourhood.”

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the brilliant photos, the “talking” birds, and the inspiration your posts bring!
All birds and the furry creatures should love you for your care and masses of a wonderful food!

      1. These are the great mysteries of life. Along with:
        How many angels…?
Who lost my baggage ? Who can I yell at in the airport to make myself feel heard and important?
Who is Silvia? What is she?
        What passing bells?
        So many more.

That said – I have some confidence that you will spot and then name the perpetrator.

Thank-you – as always – for your posts.

      2. I would venture to guess that if your baggage is lost my ex-employer might be involved. As to who you can yell at…waste of time. The only people who deserve being shouted at are at home with their feet up or on a luxury holiday.

  2. As it happens my baggage was mislaid on my last trip. (My flight was late in arriving at a transfer location in a very busy airport – Schiphol – so fully understandable). Very annoying for all the usual reasons. The airport staff at Norwich went out of their way to help me arrange for a rather complicated delivery of said luggage. (if tomorrow then here, if in two days then there.) No shouting involved in spite of separation from essential items!

    1. It’s always best not to shout if you hope to ever see your bag again. We had awful baggage issues and most of the staff worked really hard at locating the lost items and re-uniting them with their owner. But some travellers could be so nasty you wanted to put a rush tag on their bag and send it to the rings around Saturn where all terminally lost bags go. My favourite vengeance story involved a woman who checked in for a flight to the Caribbean and was disturbed to see a crowd of black people in line. She was upset at the idea of having to travel with “them” and asked to see a supervisor. He happened to have a very white name, it being Scandinavian. However he was from Haiti. He arrived on the scene with a big smile: “How may I help you?” he asked. The woman simply turned and walked away.

  3. That’s weird … I wonder, do the groundhogs eat the carrots chewed/crunched by however? Haha, the birds just need to know, at your house they have to share with all animals! Lovely photos of them all (especially those close ups).
