Photographs

1545/17th April 2024

Without consulting the oracle, it was obvious late yesterday that our weather was on the change.

.

It had been my favourite sort of day but the change made for a pretty sky.

.

Beautiful skies are like beautiful music.

Endless variations, all irresistible.

.

It set me thinking.

Which would be more terrible:

to become blind or to become deaf?

.

Luckily a choice I am unlikely to face.

….

Mama groundhog came up for a break.

“You better not be fighting down there!”

“Horrible little groundhoglets!”

.

“Glub.”

.

“I swallowed my false teeth!”

.

“Tee hee. That’s silly.”

“Groundhogs don’t have false teeth!”

.

“You need a interpreter.”

“She say she swallow a fly.”

.

We always know it’s Little Red and not one of her children because of her unusual tail.

She has been entertaining us now for over 4 years. The adirondack red squirrel’s longevity may be as much as 10 years though 3 to 5 is average.

.

.

I defy anyone to look at Little Red and not smile.

.

If it’s not Little Red, there is always some cute face in the window.

When there are no nuts on offer they lay a guilt trip on you, or sometimes they just stare.

.

There are lots of baby greys out there somewhere, as well as baby reds, that much is apparent!

.

A goldfinch waited in the hedge for a turn at the njyer seed.

.

Grant says photograph subjects are more interesting if they are not centred.

I’m happy if I get them anywhere in the frame.

.

Deaf, sleeping cats are easier to capture.

.

Willow has a new favourite crib.

Blanket and all.

.

You see what I mean about being in the frame.

.

Many of my favourite photographs are the ones that are not perfect, like this one of Grisabel who left me too soon.

.

And this very poignant picture of “M” on the last day of his life.

With this I have to stop for now.

Most days when I see photos of my departed friends, I smile at the memories of the times we had.

Today, I’m not sure why but I feel only the heartbreak.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for proving with your excellent photography that the invention of the camera was one of the greatest achievements! It is difficult not to grief for such a wonderful friends…
And it is better not to be blind as the world is such a magical place!

  2. The photos of Little Red in the birds’ food bowl are gorgeous — those little hands she folds together are so cute! Hopefully she’s going to entertain you for a few more years.

  3. Deaf or Blind? I choose deaf every time, no hesitation.
Photos of departed pets will always be heartbreaking, as will the fond memories, photos or not.
    Best wishes, Pete.
