Mrs Cardinal was hanging on to a frosty twig and hoping that breakfast would soon be served.
These past few days I’ve heard a few mutterings in the hedges about false rumours of an early Spring!
.
“Hey! No pictures till after breakfast!”
“And not before I get my plumage sorted!”

.

In extreme weather situations, we worry about our little friends.
Little Red came to reassure us that she was well.
.

.
Mostly we were concerned about Scooter. The burrows had all been buried by the heavy snow.
So we were relieved when her little head popped up.

.

Bearing in mind that this may be our last snow, we had to go out for a scenic tour.
Avoiding the back roads.
.
The tamaracks were now frost-free although many other trees were still cased in ice.

.

.
Strong sunlight on Sunday had started a thaw, but the temperature plummeted again before the trees and bushes had shaken off their icy coats.

.

In the village we came upon some interesting icicles.
Not quite sure how this happened!
.

.
Many of our scenic drives involve back roads but we thought they might not yet be in the best of shape, so we decided to stick to paved highways.

.

.
There’s nothing quite like a sunny day after snow.

.

Not a cloud in the sky.

.
We meandered here and there intending to end up in Greenwich but to avoid having a car behind us, Grant turned off suddenly and next thing, we were on the way to Bennington instead.

.

As much as the man hates driving behind a “putt-putt”, he hates even more having a car behind because we like to slow down when there are photographic opportunities.
And there are plenty.
.
On my own, I would just pull over and stop but he is more considerate than me.

.

Any day’s a good day to go to Vermont.

.
I’ll admit I was fascinated by this ice that wouldn’t melt. It had got quite warm the day before and at the time I took these photos, the temperature was far above freezing.

.

Strange, no?
.
Thin cloud was drifting in.

.

Silhouettes…
.
…and shadows.

.

.
Soon there will be corn growing in these fields again.
The contrast of seasons never ceases to amaze me.

Remember I said we were going to Vermont?
We haven’t even crossed the state line yet 🙂
Maybe we’ll do that tomorrow!
Hooray for Scooter! We haven’t had ‘first snow’ yet, let alone ‘last snow’. And that is great news, as far as I am concerned.
Best wishes, Pete.
There’s always tomorrow!
I do hope, Carolyn, that this is the last post of snow and ice!
More picks of your friends, please!
Joanna
Oh my, the snow looks like a blanket around Little Red (and she seems to be smiling for the camera) – cute! And glad to see Scooter too … shame, they’re probably just as surprised as the rest of us about the start of Spring in your part of the world! The icicles looked like they had to face a strong wind. It’s wonderful to drive through the snowy landscape, thank you for taking us with you.
