Comparison

7th October 2023

Little white butterflies flit about, often in pairs, but I have never before seen one alight and stay for a photograph.

Rather a long shot from my desk. Then when I looked at the image I saw the very big bee.

Gaillardia keeps offering its blooms. It is an admirable plant!

.

Yesterday’s appointment took us on a route we seldom travel these days and I acquired a rather large additional number of Fall frames.

But before I do that, I left you hanging the other night at the point where my battery went flat. The camera’s that is.

.

As it turned out, there would have been plenty of time for me to dig out another battery and exchange them but well, you never know.

The iPhone went to work.

“Look out the window!” I yelled

.

“Which window?”

“Duh!”

To be fair, at this time of day it is usually the foxes Grant is watching for.

.

.

How many variations can you take?

.

Quite a few in fact.

.

Dancing around in the wet grass, Grant called me to go to where he stood:

“Look: it ends right in the pot farm!”

Indeed it did.

.

As the Sun dropped to the horizon, different features caught its glow.

.

Out there, beyond my wall, the world was still bathed in gold.

.

Swinging to face South, I saw that the rainbow’s other end fell at the bottom of the lane which gives us access to the State route.

The marijuana farm may well have a pot of gold. Sadly, we do not.

Our good neighbours would surely have shared it. Perhaps not.

.

Not many hours later…

.

Fall’s thinning-out phase is delightful.

.

Taking advantage of a fine morning we set off along a much-changed Main Street.

Then, remembering that the Post Office was closed for a public holiday, we turned around to go instead for a short drive to Stump Church.

All summer, there had been notices about the road being closed, so we looked out to see what work had been accomplished.

.

.

It was apparently very discreet.

.

A lovely morning for a sedate drive along leafy lanes.

.

Not a soul in sight.

.

.

Semi-clad silhouettes.

.

Stump Church and view from. 2023.

.

It is an enchanting sight, particularly at this time of year.

For comparison, I looked up last year’s photographs which were taken at the same time of day:

on 16th October, 2022.

.

Fall 2022 was unendingly glorious. The most stunning sight I have ever seen.

.

As good an example as any, why one should never take anything for granted.

Not that we did. We were awestruck.

We did not expect it to happen again and this year is perfectly lovely. Just different. More restrained.

.

.

You will hear no complaints from me.

.

As wonderful as last year’s Fall was, people didn’t seem to have noticed until I drew their attention to it.

“Oh yes. It was nice, wasn’t it?”

But I don’t see that many people and not everyone has the luxury of being retired which is when you start to notice.

.

These three little trees are on my favourites list. They sit bravely together in that spot, against the horizon.

The list is getting very long. I hope you are not bored with Fall as I still have, just a few more of these restrained pictures.

  1. As I love trees with a passion, I can never be bore to look at them, so please, Carolyn, keep
publishing your stunning photos as often as you can. You live in a little paradise, and to see no one
on your journeys, just the trees is beyond wonderful. Shame about no pot of gold at the end of your magical rainbow but as it is so spectacular it can be forgiven.

  2. Wow, your rainbow photos are incredibly beautiful! How many variations of the word “beautiful” are there šŸ™‚. I agree that the fall of 2022 was truly one of a kind, but this year, as you say yourself, it is beautiful in a different way. I’m far from bored Carolyn … you can keep the pictures coming!
