Light

12th October 2026

It is surprising how the aspect of Fall varies within but a few miles.

When we took a day off from touring the countryside, I found enough to photograph at home. Staying in one place for once, I got to observe the light though the day and to note how very much it changes a scene.

After a grey day on the 12th, the Sun broke through to throw late rays across the field.

It looked a pinkish gold.

Absent the Sun on the Tuesday morning, things looked decidedly orange.

.

Even beneath an overcast sky, the field and woods seemed to radiate.

.

With the zoom I got a closer look at some of the treetops.

.

“My tree”. It marks the edge of the property.

Inspecting the property for the first time, I noticed this little tree immediately and I’ve watched it ever since, through the seasons. I love its shape and the colours behind it, especially lit up by the setting Sun.

The above photos were taken at 10:15 am.

This was at 17:40. The changing light drew me outside.

.

The corn fields would not be harvested for a couple more days.

Till I came here, my only experience with corn fields was what I saw in photographs or movies. I did not expect to be so taken with the sight of them in different stages.

The following day was also overcast. We returned from a morning out beneath skies grown angry, though as I recall it was all unproductive bluster.

.

In mid afternoon sudden and dazzling sun breaks beamed roving spotlights over the land.

.

Asked to choose, I think I would say I prefer the photo taken under more subdued lighting, but I do enjoy these occasional exciting light shows.

.

Light always finds Hill House.

(Hill House because it sits on the hill opposite. It could just as well be the Light House.)

  1. It’s interesting to see the changes in the same scene within a few hours. We have an Atlantic storm hitting England today and tomorrow. The south-west has lost power in severe winds, and across the other side of the country in Beetley, we have non-stop rain forecast for 48 hours, with no reprieve until Sunday.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. In your previous posts I mentioned that orange, yellow, and red were the dominant colours and how beautiful that is … but how unbelievably green is the green!! And now there’s even pinkish gold too – I think you’re going to run out of amazing autumn colours soon 😉. Love that last photo of the Hill House!
