Return from the big city

Friday rush hour outside Albany (9th Oct). (Really not very big, actually)

New computer in hand, we made tracks for home hoping to avoid the ever lengthening queue of traffic on the thruway. Once again, we exited just in time to avoid that debacle which was a problem if you were heading for Saratoga Springs.

Luckily we weren’t. We were going home via Troy.

.

Samaritan Hospital, Troy, NY.

Cresting the hill before descending toward the town of Troy, one is impressed by a large, solid building that dominates the terrain.

Samaritan Hospital opened in 1898.

.

A traffic light brought us to a halt in front of DUNKIN. Who knew they dropped the Donuts in January 2019?

We’ve been past this building many times since then without noticing the sign, but then we don’t eat donuts. The last time I ate one was probably more than 50 years ago. I quite liked them but was always counting calories.

.

When I belatedly got around to examining these photos from the previous week, it was notable how much Fall had advanced in those few days.

After last Fall’s disappointing show, this year is a real pleasure and we have been out touring the countryside numerous times.

.

It is always a relief to escape back into the country after braving traffic in the big city!

.

My sort of sight. Benign clouds drifting by late on a Fall afternoon in the country.

Peace.

.

In the distance, the cloud burst ever so briefly.

A house sits on the left hand side, just below the rim of this hill. We look out for the three dogs that patrol the property, barking madly at us as we pass by, a golden labrador the ring leader. He looks a happy dog and I’m sure we’d be friends, but we don’t stop:(

.

Over the last few days, we’d passed this row of trees, six times.

Finally, we were able to slow down.

.

The light was the right way round and the tree still bore some leaves.

Trees on skylines, another of my favourite subjects.

.

A lone green tree stands as if in defiance before the woods that are aflame.

Until I lived here, I’d always assumed the trees turned all at once. I suppose I’d never taken the time to notice, or never lived in a place where Fall was so colourful.

.

Not sure, but I think it’s a sycamore.

At the first hint of shortening days, some trees appear to just give up, not bothering with fancy farewells. I imagine this one shrugging its clothes to the ground in a single release.

Then standing proudly like a naked exhibitionist at a dress-up party.

.

Dropping down into Cambridge. Colour was beginning to show on the hills.

.

Having got over the initial melancholy of early Fall, I have reached the stage of fully embracing it as the amazing, special time that it is.

On Saturday, following this short outing, we went again to Vermont for a less short trip,

  1. You had me at doughnuts (not donuts) as they are my favourite treat. Especially Krispy Kreme glazed rings. We haven’t had branches of Dunking Doughnuts over here for years now, not since they closed down the main operation in 1999. A few franchise branches remain, but nothing anywhere near where I live.

    Best wishes, Pete.
