Small moments

0927/ 8th August 2026

The absence of sunshine is sometimes just what is needed to highlight a field.

And fields that are fallow at this time of year are full of wildflowers.

.

Wild carrot, chicory, clover and an assortment of grasses. Enchanting.

.

Juvenile Red-tailed hawk.

That day it was just an extended return trip from the village.

You never know what you’ll see.

.

Sometimes, just a tree.

.

Better without the wires, but editing to this extent I feel is cheating? Dishonest?

It’s what I would prefer to see, but not what is.

.

When possible, I change the angle or get closer, but then it’s an entirely different photograph.

Driving along that road through the woods, the framing of that lone tree always strikes me. I love the image, so why change it?

Resist what you can change, but accept what you cannot – my philosophy.

Keep things simple.

.

Squirrel with fashionable spats.

Life is complicated enough, why add to the confusion? I ask.

.

Some squirrels have the neatest little outfits.

As it ran away up the hill, late afternoon sunlight caught the prominent white hairs of its tail giving it the appearance of a magical creature.

.

Happily, on Tuesday Blackie (the squirrel) put in an appearance,

The two munched on peanuts quite amiably, which in our experience is rare for squirrels .

Small moments of this sort make living here so worthwhile.

.

Late one evening I noticed a dark shape in the waiting-room tree.

Curious, I employed the zoom which brought into focus another unusual squirrel.

.

A young squirrel, I think. It is so pristine.
I never saw such tails till I came here.

Shortly after, the squirrel jumped down from the tree and found its way around to the patio in search of a nut, but had to be content with crumbs.

We try to satisfy everyone’s requests, but our offerings are scooped up in a heartbeat.

However, at this time of year there are enough alternatives. Peanuts are just a treat.

.

Another afternoon when it was too hot to walk, the zoom took me down to the lower field for a look at the field thistles which are bursting and casting their silky fluff to the wind.

The next couple of days are going to be busy, but I must make the effort to take that walk while the field is full of life.

.

Which has already begun to fade.

  1. I have never seen a black squirrel in the wild, and would dearly love to. I understand why it is tempting to remove the wires around the lone tree, but if they are there, then that is the reality.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Thank you so much, Carolyn, for painting with words the pictures in your field, the wildflowers, a squirrel and the beauty of the summer.

  3. You have lovely photos in this post, Carolyn. But I have to say that the lone tree framed by other trees is my favourite – there’s an eerie feeling about it, but yet so beautiful (and I actually like the wires in it)! Oh, and the cute squirrels are a very close second 😊.
