Admittedly, we have not been home for portions of the past few days, but the turkey duo that had been visiting regularly had been absent for 3 days.
The last sighting I think was on Saturday.
And no sooner did I write the words….they appeared on the pato.
While I don’t take these visits for granted, I miss my wild friends when they don’t show up.
.

Turkey poults are so sweet.
They remind me of a favourite photograph. (I only have a few hundred!):
.

I came across this years ago on Pinterest which often appeared in my feed back then. The page owner is Sandra Hazen, but I don’t know if she was the photographer.
It is an image that lends itself to inspirational quotes but I just love the family.
If you go looking, there are many such photos, but I love this one and seeing little turkeys always reminds me of it.
.

When we turned off, on our return, the dear deer were far too close to the state route. Seeing us approach, they shot off into the brush and hopefully remained in the woods.
.

In the village I finally got a photo of the heavily laden crab apple trees in front of the now defunct Italian restaurant.
We have a local diner, a take-out Chinese and a pizza parlour and it appears someone new is making another attempt to resuscitate the burger joint, but restaurants don’t do well here. From what we hear, staffing is a major issue and these days eating out is rather a luxury.
Years ago I enjoyed a dinner out, which was quite affordable, but in recent years my diet has become so restricted as to make restaurant eating impractical. As a vegetarian, I can always find something on the menu, but these days I have many annoying intolerances. How they suddenly arrived, I don’t know. I suppose it’s more that over time I worked out that avoiding certain things was helpful – and the list became long!
The absence of restaurants is only a nuisance when on rare occasions a friend comes to visit. Years ago (many years), I could put together a meal that was just about edible and Grant produces what I believe is a respectable curry (non-veg and too spicy for me), but we would not subject friends to suffering a meal in our shambles of a house that we long ago gave over entirely to our feline companions.
.

Now that our population is reduced to 5, perhaps we could contain the mess, but we are used to it and the only people who ever come by are fix-it folk who have seen far worse, so why start now telling our aging cats that certain things are off limits, or some behaviour will no longer be tolerated after so many years?
.

Dee Dee, who thinks she’s the boss, would give us a LOOK.
.

Lily, who doesn’t care to be the boss, would add an octave to her nightly howls.
.

Willow might easily take offence and would likely pee on something inconvenient.
.

Blackie would take copious notes and tie herself in knots trying to comply.
“I never want to be a bother!”
…she assures me as she cuddles up ever closer in my face, simultaneously attempting to manoeuvre herself into the space Lily had previously occupied…
…which works unless Lily wakes up.
.

“Rules? There are no rules. I’m a Cat!”
So there you have it!
.
So sweet!
We tend not to have people over socially any longer. Other than family, who have become used to our clutter, and the ‘I’ll do it one day when I’m in the mood’ attitude to housework. Good to see the big group of Turkeys, and I was glad that the Deer decided to retreat into the woods.
Best wishes, Pete.
Thank you so much, Carolyn, for the wonderful photos of the creatures, your thoughts on entertaining, and the cooking at home. Your home looks lovely and comfortable for everyone who lives there. I love the red apples!

Haha 😁, you’re right Carolyn, if I look at your photos and descriptions of each cat, guests will know what they’re getting into when they come over for a visit! Eating out is a luxury these days – luckily, I have a husband who makes delicious food (and, may I say, most of the time tastes better than what is served at restaurants).
Wonderful pictures. Being a pet-aunt (don’t ask!), I know what you mean by a house owned by cats. They pee where they want, sit in whomever’s face they like, pick out the keys of whichever laptop they choose and try whatever is on the table for humans. Their house, their rules!
