Happy Friday

0602/8th May 2026

Failing to check for wildlife, I went charging out to get the above photograph and scared off a fox that was tucking into the peanuts I’d put out earlier.

So, when Grant went out I made him take a special offering to be delivered by the old wall where we believe their den is, along with my apologies.

.

Inadvertently disturbing wildlife upsets me because I’m afraid they won’t come back, but I suspect the lure of food overcomes momentary panic and it’s not as if I am all that scary.

.

The turkeys will have been pleased, however, to find the red bowl still full.

.

They recently discovered the joy that is a peanut!

These two stalk by frequently and yesterday decided to poke at the seed bowls where they encountered peanuts for the first time. They seemed quite keen.

.

Debating whether or not to try that orange thing so many others seem to favour.

The turkey passed it up.

.

It rained for a large part of Thursday and we had some very wet visitors.

Mr Grosbeak brought his sweet wife to see us.

.

The Catbird also allowed a photograph.

.

Later on, the Towhee turned up. I thought I caught sight of it under the hedge, but when a Grosbeak appeared, I decided I’d been mistaken since their colour combination is similar.

As you can see, they are actually quite different. When you have unreliable eyesight things tend to blur a little, however soon the Towhee came to pose.

.

No sooner had I sat back down than I got called to view yet another bird, one we’d never seen before, the female Towhee. Out in Washington we saw lots of Towhees, but even there I’m not sure we ever saw a female.

They wouldn’t pose together but to see them both was a treat.

.

“All ‘dis fluttering an flapping distract me from my dinner!”

Baldy was having a hard time concentrating. When she’s done with the carrots, she comes up on the porch for peanut pudding, as by that time of day there are none left on the grass.

.

Thursday brought another brand new visitor, an unusually pale-complected deer.

She was very shy and did not linger.

.

Keen to avoid the weekend bike marathon, we went food shopping on Friday which involved going again to Greenwich where, these days, we are on the lookout for the Bar-headed goose!

.

Canada geese

Probably not the family we saw recently, because this pair had at least 8 goslings.

.

We were just in time to see another goose climbing out of the river.

.

Safe on the opposite shore, it was not at all bothered by me.

.

Or by a nearby Canada goose.

.

Since catching sight of the Bar-headed goose some weeks ago, we’ve wondered where it might have got to and hoped that it was faring well. As it is native to Asia, we believe that it must have escaped from someone’s collection, however it seems just fine.

And that made for a very happy Friday.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the indeed, happy Friday! Beautiful collection of birds, married or single, and all the other creatures who dine at your establishment. I absolutely loved your thoughts on feeling a need to help those asking for help. Unfortunately, I couldn’t access the comments section. As luck has it, today, I can!

  2. Poor baldy Groundhog. I wonder why its fur has never grown back? You had a lovely selection of visitors to show us today, Carolyn.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. Oh, I’m sure if the fox sees that photo, he/she will understand why you rushed out of house – it’s beautiful! Isn’t it wonderful to be able to see such a wide variety of birds (and other animals) in your garden every day? You definitely don’t have a single boring day … whether it’s wildlife or beautiful skies.

  4. Beautiful pics! My daughter cherishes each one (She downloads them for future reference so often, I have to take her permission all the time while cleaning my phone).
