Harvest Moon

1857/6th October 2025

The moon is so bright just now, I keep waking in the middle of the night thinking it’s time to get up.

Then when I look outside, the moonlight makes it appear to have snowed.

Things aren’t always what they seem!

.

Living in the country, a clear night sky is something to behold.

Boston is 188 miles from here. Grant thinks it unlikely to be the glow we sometimes see on the southeast horizon, but I don’t know what else it can be. I am very happy to be free of light pollution.

.

The lights of a big city are certainly very pretty when seen from a distance or when flying overhead and I wouldn’t care to live in a city that wasn’t well lit

Out here, night darkness is a good thing.

Though moonlight is very acceptable, even if it does occasionally wake me.

.

“Hey! Where are you all going?”

Coming back from the village the other day, we stopped by the Masonic Lodge so I could take a picture of a favourite tree and inadvertently disturbed some Canada geese that were resting in the adjacent corn field.

.

They took to the air honking.

Sorry guys!

.

It’s just a little tree. The white bark stands out nicely against a blue sky.

Power lines and poles get in the way, so I settled for a partial photo.

.

Across the road an apple tree has been leafless for some time, though the fruit clings on.

.

And the nine tree unnecessarily felled in the Spring seem determined to regrow.

.

If the sight of a fawn pronking is a delight, so are sparrows bathing:

It may be how we interpret it, but they certainly look happy!

When I was a child, my parents had budgies and I loved watching them in their water bath. I am equally delighted by sparrows or any other bird.

.

While the sunflowers may look dejected…

.

Chickadee

Birds are enjoying picking at the seeds.

.

They have attracted goldfinches that are only occasional visitors.

In the past couple of days some Fall visitors began returning, in droves.

Ladybirds!

Everything has its season.

  1. We also have total darkness at night in Beetley. So last night’s huge Moon was like a giant searchlight illuminating the village.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Thank you, Carolyn, for the wonderful pictures of the Harvest Moon and the wildlife met on your trips, the trees, and the blue sky. I love watching the Full Moon as it lights my room.

  3. Here on the farm, it’s always pitch dark during the night, but I have also woken up a few times last night from the “bright light” shining through our window. I love your photo with the geese in flight, and the video of the sparrows taking a bath is pure delight (for them and for me 😉). So true … there is a season for everything!

  4. Lovely! We have much reduced night skies as we live by the city, I often miss the country for that reason. A few years ago Jennie’s mom gave us a circulating fountain which is a great bird bath!
