On the way to an early appointment, a song came to me from 1973.
Listening, after returning home, I realised how very appropriate it is for these times.
.
The Morning After...theme to the film The Poseidon Adventure:
.
There’s got to be a morning after
If we can hold on through the night
We have a chance to find the sunshine
Let’s keep on looking for the lightOh, can’t you see the morning after
It’s waiting right outside the storm
Why don’t we cross the bridge together
And find a place that’s safe and warmIt’s not too late
We should be giving
Only with love can we climb
It’s not too late
Not while we’re living
Let’s put our hands out in timeThere’s got to be a morning after
We’re moving closer to the shore
I know we’ll be there by tomorrow
And we’ll escape the darkness
We won’t be searching any moreThere’s got to be a morning after…

.

It was my intention to post a link to the song on YouTube, but my current version of WP declines the privilege.
With patience, I might succeed, but there’s every chance I wouldn’t, so…
.
It’s one of those songs I remember so well, yet haven’t thought of for decades.
.
The song was written in March of 1972 when Al and Joel were asked to write the love theme to The Poseidon Adventure in one night. The original title was “Why Must There Be a Morning After,”, but it was later changed. In the film, actress Carol Lynley lip-syncs to the actual performance by singer Renee Armand.

.

The sensation of being trapped in an upside down ship has a vague semblance to current affairs too.
.
“Oh it’s not so bad, missus.”
“You could be out here in the snow.”

.

“I come play wiv you?”
.
“I t’ink better you stay there.”

.

More snow overnight.

“Wee! I makes like a penguin!”
.
“Idiot Junco.”

.

Idiot blogger?
.
Needing to rise promptly this morning, I’d set the alarm on my phone last thing before lights out.
Checked I’d done it properly and laid the phone down.
So how did it shut itself off?

.

Luckily, it didn’t matter, but how do these things happen?
My old-fashioned alarm clock never failed!
.
The additional snow did not amount to much and although surfaces are slippery, we had an easy journey to Salem for my appointment.
The clinic there is smaller and quieter than the one in Greenwich and can be reached in 20 minutes.

.

It’s the same route we take to the veterinary hospital.
.
Icy but traffic-free.

.

The world looked happier with a clearing sky.

.
Strong wind gusts blew snow around.

.

Route 22 vegetable farm.
.
Early morning route 22.

.

As well as being faster, the journey to Salem is more pleasant than busy route 372 to Greenwich.
.
Schoolhouse Lake frozen over.

.

Tomorrow will be an earlier start, for Clifton Park which is much further.
Will the alarm turn itself off?
My electric tablet has Alexa on it. Perhaps I could charge her with waking me as a back-up?
.
Perhaps I’ll do it just for fun.
Alexa was part of the package and I don’t use it, but sometimes I ask her difficult questions just to hear her say:
“I don’t know the answer to that question.”

.

Because I like technology to confirm it doesn’t know everything.
.
Passing a row of favourite trees reminded me of the savagery that just took place in Cambridge.

.

Another row of favourites, felled last week for no good reason.
No overhead power lines, no decaying or damaged branches, no obstacles to traffic.
No excuse.
Savages.
To say the least.
What mornings these Caro. Looks so isolated and Cold. The song is apt and lyrics do feels from 50 years ago but can be heard and read for a lifetime.
I remember the film, as it was my favourite one of that crop of ‘disaster’ films, but I don’t remember the song at all. I have some kind of voice assistant on my Amazon Fire Tablet, but I have never used it. On the rare occasions I need an alarm I use my Oppo phone, which has never let me down. (So far)
Best wishes, Pete.
Thank you, Carolyn, for the interesting post! I also feel angry when trees are cut down for no valid reason! Is there no authority in your village who could be alerted to this terrible vandalism?!
I love your photographic talent but cannot wait for spring and a change of scenery! All the wildlife in your garden is waiting too!
Joanna
PS. I love the lyrics of the song! Thank you!
Joanna
Is that song ?

Have a nice week, Carolyn.
Thank you! Yes, that’s it!
Looking forward to The Morning After!
Never saw the film but I definitely know the song.
I’m not a fan of black ice and my partner calls me “Bambi on Ice” when I walk on hard snow because I’m always slipping.
That’s strange that WP won’t let you post a YouTube link, I’d get onto support about that…if you have a couple of hours to spare.
I hate seeing trees chopped down, especially established trees and sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason why a council/person does this, which reminds me of a while back.
Not sure if I mentioned this before but when I lived in Townsville (on a boat), the pylons ran along the break wall that was beautified by lovely trees. Because it was so hot, First Nations people would sit and drink under these trees daily, they’d leave a mess more often than not. To stop them from doing this the Council cut down all the trees. I returned from work one day and they were all gone – it was awful and nasty!
I don’t know the song, but the words couldn’t be further from the truth! And again, the road looks so much different early in the morning. You can show me the same road in the Summer, and I’d probably say it’s the first time I’ve seen the road. Ha, I’ve never used Alexa, but I’m glad there are questions that even she doesn’t know the answers to!
