Puddle ducking

12th December 2024

.

Feeling the urge to check on the condition of other rivers, we plugged instructions into my phone and set off, noting a distinct and sudden change in the weather.

A bitter wind had got up, bringing snow.

.

But there was fair sky ahead.

Inevitably, to get to where we intended a twirly was necessary and we found ourselves heading back to route 22 for the third time.

.

Once more through Eagle Bridge where we saw this splendid sycamore reaching out across the river.

.

Then we came upon the Eagle Bridge Canoe and Kayak Launch, so we had to check that out.

By now I was wishing I’d worn a coat and boots.

.

Below the confluence of the Walloomsac and the Owl Kill, the Hoosic River was impressive.

.

Escaping the squall, we followed the Hoosic toward the Hudson River.

.

Snow? What snow?

What wind?

.

Soon we came to Schaghticoke.

Don’t ask me to pronounce it.

.

The fairgrounds give you a view of the surrounding sky and its various types of weather.

.

The Hudson River was this way…

.

at right angles to our usual approach.

.

Frozen puddles at Stillwater.

.

The river had changed a little since last we were there.

No longer anywhere for a bird to sit!

But don’t worry, we soon found them.

.

Happily grazing on someone’s lawn.

.

Bobbing about noisily.

.

Puddle ducking.

.

It seems the tide came in unexpectedly.

.

The wind had picked up again…

.

.

So we climbed back in the car and continued on…

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the wonderful photos of the sky, the flood rivers, iced puddles, and the many birds! All greatly interesting! No wonder you like traveling!

  2. Instructions into your phone? Surely your new car has a Satnav? (I think you call it GPS over there.)
Either way, you certainly found what you were looking for. 🦆
    Best wishes, Pete.
