Slim pickings

1620/24th November 2024

.

There being a hill in the way, we don’t see the sun set unless we drive somewhere with a view.

However, when the conditions are right, we get a variation of the sunset which almost resembles dawn, which we see every day at this time of year.

.

It almost looks like sunrise.

.

Sunset paints the tops of the clouds rather than the underside, yet there is a rosy glow on the horizon in just the place where the Sun rises.

.

You know, I am a cloud enthusiast!

.

Yesterday’s rain tapered off at 2 pm cheering things up immeasurably.

.

Grey days serve a purpose.

They bring needed rain and they remind us to celebrate when the Sun returns with such a pretty picture.

.

Last night’s variation of sunset.

.

Rain kept our night visitors away.

.

It was good to see them back last night. When they arrive at the same time, the skunks tend to push the possums aside but there is seldom an altercation.

The littlest possum however is quite cheeky to her elders. We suspect she must be their naughty child.

.

As we’ve come to believe is a normal pattern, the squirrels all vanished again at the beginning of Fall.

We see a great many through the summer, then suddenly they are gone, leaving not a one in sight.

But now it seems that we have a few returnees. Or perhaps they missed the transport.

.

In 2022 we named a pale chap Ghost. He left that Fall never to return:(

Ghost2?

We wonder if the new Ghost is a descendant.

.

Recently I’ve seen a squirrel running around on three legs.

There is no obvious injury but the leg seems permanently bent, keeping the foot off the ground which apparently bothers the animal not at all.

That individual declined to be photographed.

.

The Cooper’s hawk came looking for lunch recently but I’m afraid it was slim pickings under our hedge.

.

The chipmunks are hibernating and when Coop turned up, the little brown jobs wisely fled.

It’s extraordinary to see this large bird ferreting about in a dense hedge. Hopefully it found a snack elsewhere.

He may be the only one who turns down a peanut.

  1. Today was a ‘dark all day’ day here in Beetley. I went to bed last night in the dark, and when I got up at 07:45 it was still dark. Lights on all day, listening to the rain outside. Then pitch dark at 16:20. It has felt like a very long night, twice over. Good to see the possums and Skunks. (I haven’t seen a squirrel in the garden for a few weeks now.)
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Well, I wouldn’t have been too displeased with such a sunset – beautiful colours. Ha, there is always that one child (the naughty one) in a family … and it seems it even works that way in the animal kingdom 😉. I love seeing squirrels among your photos – I would love to have a big tree here in our garden where a few squirrels could live. Lovely photos of your wildlife.
