Summit Lake.

16th March 2024

Give me a situation and I’ll endeavour to make the best of it, but don’t ask me to make decisions!

What?

.

Yesterday’s post left you high and dry on approach to Summit Lake and it was my intention to continue that excursion.

.

But last night Nature delivered one of her impromptu spectacles that had us both gasping in awe.

My humble pictures will only give you a hint of its splendour, but I had to decide whether to leave you stranded on Saturday and post last night while it is fresh, or not…

.

We’re going round the lake..

.

Not really a hard decision.

Last night was exciting but it can wait.

.

Summit Lake is very pretty but one has to take pictures driving by, as it is all private property and there is nowhere to stop.

.

As clouds drifted across the sun, I got a whole range of snippets.

.

The lake being on the driver’s side wasn’t helpful.

.

In this stage trees look refreshed.

Ready to begin again.

.

It’s how they appear to me anyway.

The sky still commanded my attention,

.

as well as its reflection.

.

At the age of 76, I have a fairly large array of physical ailments.

Fortunately they don’t often all flare up at once.

.

I mention this only to make a point.

.

No matter how beset with discomfort I may be, car trips of this sort always provide a distraction and for me they are the best medicine.

.

We drove only along the southern shore of the lake and then continued on more or less in the direction of home.

.

By now it was late afternoon.

.

It looked like some sort of celestial speedway up there.

.

Brush technique?

Impressive.

.

The artist was showing off!

.

Silhouettes make a good frame.

.

Adding a few cows to the tableau.

.

.

Back in Greenwich, they were rolling up the sidewalks.

.

We got behind a Vermont putt-putt.

.

No hard decision here.

We shot off to the left.

.

The longer, scenic route.

.

.

No traffic here!

.

Shadows were elongating.

.

Starlings.

.

The 3 quarters pink farmhouse was now a 3 quarters blue farmhouse!

.

By now it may be entirely blue.

.

There’s no rule I know of that says how you should paint your house.

Surely having different coloured walls offends no-one?

.

Recently I was prepared to wear two different coloured shoes…

My feet are impossible but I found cheap ankle-boots which filled my every need.

..

Delighted with my find, I bought a pair in a different colour.

The problem with these boots is that they have zippers and one of them broke.

Not the sort of thing one can get repaired.

.

So what? I could wear one of each colour.

But I had a better idea. At $15 a pair, I could order another set and have a spare.

.

This reminded me of another pair of boots I own, also cheap as it happens.

We got out of the car to go shopping one day, a few years ago and looking down I cracked up.

“What?” asked the man.

“I’ve got my boots on the wrong feet.”

.

They were vaguely interchangeable but walking through Hannaford’s we couldn’t stop laughing.

If you had my feet, you’d understand.

.

With so much chit-chat I’ve managed to get you all the way home, a whole day early.

.

Turning off the state route

A last shot of that sky.

.

“Don’t you know what time it is?”

.

“Yeah! I bin waitin’ here!”

.

“I’ll take mine alfresco, please.”

.

“Hello stinky-boy!”

.

“Am not!”

.

“Come on Dee Dee, leave him alone.”

They all had supper and that was that.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for your study in pictures of the sky! And you are so right writing about the healing power of nature, nothing works better! Thank you!

  2. What a lovely ride, and a sweet crew to come home to! 😍
    Thank you for sharing.

  3. Driving past any kind of water (whether it’s the ocean or a lake) it’s always a pleasure to see. The lake photos are beautiful and also those of the sky (oh yes, and no traffic). Hmm, I was wondering what the cats at home would say about you two driving around late afternoon! I can’t wait to see the other spectacle!

  4. It’s a pity that the lake is completely private and has nowhere to stop to sit and enjoy the views. But you had a beautiful day for your drive. I once got all the way across to the local nature reserve until I realised I had my Wellington boots on the wrong feet.
    Best wishes, Pete.
