Not again!

29th January 2024

After so many grey days, this very brief glimpse of blue got me quite excited, but it seems we must be patient until Saturday, which reportedly will begin an extended period of clear skies.

With snow on the ground, the absence of sunshine is actually not a bad thing. Even on a grey day the glare can be quite dazzling.

.

“I’ll be dazzled if you give me a nut!”

Someone’s always hitting me up for a snack.

Luckily, a delayed shipment arrived this morning.

.

“Nuts?!”

said Dee Dee.

“Where’s the cat stuff?”

.

Heading downtown yesterday. Barely a car in sight.

Some days our narrow Main Street is lined with cars parked on both sides.

Other days it’s like a ghost town but we’ve never worked out when or why.

.

Now don’t moan…

I’m taking you to Greenwich – again.

.

This unexpected snowfall was entirely different to the last powdery lot.

Strong winds had made a mere 3 inches appear quite dramatic.

And different.

.

An obscure sky was perfect for viewing purposes.

.

Heavy wet snow seemed plastered on.

.

With random spraying.

As Grant said, it was as if some supreme being had emptied a gigantic bag of flour over the hills.

.

Very pretty.

.

Yes, I got quite carried away.

This was unique. The amount of snow, the temperature and wind, overcast sky and yes, even the time of day gave me this.

In 60 years of experience, I have never seen anything quite like this. Except in Dr Zhivago.

.

Not better. Just different.

.

Some trees had apparently escaped the dusting, plastering or spraying, yet the ground at their feet was snow-covered.

Maybe it melted away?

But why only here and there?

.

Just a little further on…

Maybe it’s true that in old age you return to your childhood.

I would be one of those annoying kids with endless unanswerable questions.

.

Luckily, the cars in front did not go putt-putt!

.

It would actually have suited me fine to progress a little slower, but then I would never get you to Greenwich today, never mind back.

.

Bad haircut hill. Grant’s name for it.

It’s interesting to see the actual shape.

More of a carbuncle, I think.

.

.

It was like an endless tunnel…

.

…of utter loveliness.

.

Sometimes there are turkeys here.

.

In such weather perhaps they were roosting up in the conifers, though sadly we see fewer wild turkeys these days.

We are in the country here, but urban sprawl is encroaching not far from here.

.

I try not to think of it.

It was mostly the loss of Nature that drove me back from outside Seattle.

.

In 18 years, I’d moved three times, trying to stay ahead of it.

When bulldozers began driving up the hill past my house, I knew it was time to leave.

Yet another condo complex going up.

.

How colour stands out against snow, on a grey day!

Main Street Greenwich was quiet too.

.

Colour!

.

Every time we drive past this house, I remember to take a picture of the tree, – just as we sail by.

This was an over-the-shoulder attempt!

.

Many trees are simply a lovely shape.

A better angle of this one was ruined by an ugly sign that was too big to edit out.

Ugly signs and power lines are a frustration.

.

Hmmm…

.

Returning through Greenwich.

It’s quite nice, going to the supermarket here, because you never know what you may see.

Tomorrow I’ll take you home, via an alternate route.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for your heroic efforts to prove the beauty of winter roads, the snow covered fields, and dull sky!
Your bravery is much appreciated! And, yes, the door in colour is lovely…

  2. Lovely snowy pictures, with bits of color thrown in!
Thank you for sharing, Carolyn. ❤️

  3. You’re right, this looks like a thick layer of snow. I want to make a bold statement: The trees, covered in snow, are almost as beautiful as when decked out in Autumn colours. I echo your words Carolyn – “utter loveliness”. Thanks for the drive.
