Stained glass

0840/1st October 2023

There is never a shortage of subjects to photograph here, no matter the season, the weather or time of day.

It seems that spiders are at work 24/7.

.

.

Spider webs are always most noticeable on misty mornings and recently we’ve had few days start any other way.

.

After an upsetting weekend, our empty fridge dictated a trip to Hannaford’s, so we set off for Greenwich.

The Fall of ’22 was so stunning, so special, there was no possibility it could happen again, so I had no expectations this year.

My feeling was that it could only be anti-climactic.

.

In fact, it is entirely different to any Fall I have previously experienced in these parts.

There are no startling contrasts of red, yellow, orange and green.

A blogger in Vermont commented that the leaves are simply going straight to brown without progressing through the many other shades.

.

This year, it’s mostly green, brown and down which means it will be over much sooner. Last Fall stretched out for 12 glorious weeks.

Still, some trees and shrubs are apparently obligated to turn red, such as the ubiquitous sumac.

And a few others.

.

There is always colour in the fields, harvested and not.

.

The foreground here is a pond!

Geese don’t seem bothered by the algae.

.

At the supermarket, I remained in the car taking parking-lot pictures.

.

The maples there were brilliant.

Sunlight through leaves always reminds me of stained glass windows which I love.

.

Maybe leaves inspired stained glass?

.

The above pictures were taken 2 days ago. I am lagging behind.

Some of yesterday morning’s revelations:

.

Tom’s memorial chime decorated.

Hard to find the right angle.

.

A morning mystery.

How did a brick get into that position?

Additionally, all across the property there is evidence of digging.

Such as made by the beautiful Flicker, above. But there would have to be a large flock to make so many holes.

It’s quite strange.

.

Meanwhile…

.

Images I couldn’t resist.

.

A last phlox tried to bloom but alas,

it got tied up.

.

As did the others.

.

These are all the same sort of thing…

.

…but different.

.

Irresistible (to me)

.

Hard to believe, this warm day, but winter is around the corner: frost & ice!

Will my fingers be up to that challenge?

While not a fan of summer, I have enjoyed running barefoot through the grass and being unencumbered by coats and boots and gloves.

.

Tomorrow I’ll post more pictures of our brownish but still picturesque Fall.

  1. It doesn’t matter what colour your fall is, it still makes the most beautiful photos! If a parking lot at a store looked like yours, I would drive to the store every day (not to shop, but to see the beautiful fall leaves). And I think BIG things happen at night in your garden … you’ll have to set up a video camera to see who’s visiting!

  2. The leaves on our two Oak trees are already falling while still green. This weekend, we are forecast record temperatures for October, up to 26C . (79F) The seasons are changing course in front of our eyes, and nothing seems the same any longer.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. The holes you are referring to may have been made by skunks looking for grubs. They do that in the spring & fall here in WI, not so much in summer.

    1. We have at least 4 that we know of and there were babies. They seem to like the woods behind us. Maybe they invite friends over at night. Those holes are everywhere!

  4. You have a great eye and the maple leaf colours are stunning. Love the first misty image.
Went for a hike in the Accursed Mountains (Kosovo) last and this week and the colours are just starting to turn – beautiful.
