Wonderful and otherwise

07:00. 11th October 2026. The colour of the sky set the tone for the day.

As Fall moves through its many phases, the world around us changes by the moment encouraging us out into the countryside, to see as much of it as possible.

I looks as if I may never catch up with posting the images, but there will be many days ahead no doubt with nothing to photograph, so perhaps it’s good to have a reserve.

As I write, it is late on 18th October. Normally I might by now retire with my book, however with ten days of clear weather predicted I am not sure how much writing time there will be.

We went to Vermont again today, the same route as before. The intention, I thought, was to do the journey in reverse but once on the road I discovered the man had changed his mind having decided doing it as he’d proposed would mean too much highway driving.

Dirt roads and forestry tracks are much preferred. In any case, the scenery was greatly changed from a week ago, so it was an entirely different experience and instead of doing the last bit on a highway, we simply turned around and saw everything the other way around which was a splendid idea.

11th October

In a week or so, I’ll get around to posting those photos but in the meantime….

Sunday 11th was heavily overcast when we did a shopping run to Greenwich.

.

We took the scenic route which has become the norm.

Shrubbery was removed from the roadside recently giving me a view of a favourite tree just in time to see it beginning to adopt its Fall colours. For now, I was unable to get a picture of its little companion at the top of the hill, another favourite.

.

Fall was finally setting in here in our part of New York.

.

It arrived with an intensity I’ve never seen before!

.

Along the way we came upon two vultures breakfasting on roadkill.

Vultures do such a good job of cleaning up, but all too often their meal is in the middle of a road.

They don’t hurry to move.

.

At the shopping centre in Greenwich the trees were on fire.

.

How was it that no one else seemed to be paying attention?

.

Do people who have lived here all their lives just not notice?

.

Do they not realise how extraordinary this is?

.

Four years ago when we had that spectacular, golden Fall, I exclaimed to my dentist how wonderful it had been and she said “Oh, yes. It was nice wasn’t it.”

Nice! It was unbelievable!

.

Almost the colour of that morning’s sky.

Perhaps one of the many blessings of moving about often is that you never take anything for granted and you get to see the many differences of our world.

Wonderful and otherwise.

  1. Those Autumn leaves are fantastic. I think you are right about people becoming used to beauty, when it is all they have ever known. When I first moved to Beetley, I remarked to a dog-walker how wonderful it was to have no light pollution so be able to see so many stars. She screwed up her face and replied, “I would sooner have street lights”.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. It’s very interesting how different the Falls can be. Some are merely humdrum glorious, and others so dazzling it hurts to look at them.

  3. I would be so happy to be able to see such a beautiful sunrise like that first photo of yours – wow! Oh my, and the autumn-coloured trees – they are incredibly beautiful 🍂🍂 … you’re inspiring me to go look for trees next year during our autumn (but I doubt I’ll find such beautiful flame-red trees like you have). LOVE your photos of autumn!!
