Not all grey

On a wet weekend there wasn’t much to photograph but the stormy sky.

We are far enough inland that we didn’t get any severe weather warnings and although it rained a good deal, it was never very heavy. The wind chimes rang a symphony for most of the weekend but we never felt the need to bring them indoors as we sometimes do.

A few nights ago the temperature hovered just above freezing but the storm seemed to bring warmer air, so our little wild friends were wet but not cold.

They always look so miserable when it’s wet and icy, though I seriously doubt they sit around moaning about the weather as we do.

.

Periodically small patches of blue appeared and looking up I got excited because I thought I saw the Moon shining through a small gap in the cloud.

At the best of times I wobble and in a strong gale, holding the camera aloft, it was a considerable challenge but I took a shot and showed it to Grant on my camera screen.

“That’s not the Moon, it’s a cloud.”

I tried to remember what time I’d seen the Moon two nights ago and decided he was right.

.

To a wobbly old woman with squiffy eyesight it could have been the Moon!

The little blob on the left was roundish!

The other white cloud is a man’s face, now I examine it.

.

The Cooper’s hawk perched briefly in the waiting room, which gave me another photo opportunity.

We saw it later on swooping low over the flock of turkeys as they considered again whether to saunter up the driveway and once more they opted to continue on up the hill.

Not that Coop is a threat to wild turkeys, but his sudden appearance did startle them.

Unfortunately, Cooper’s hawks are not scavengers. They like their food fresh which makes it impossible for us to help them out.

The Sun really tried to break through.

Here, the sky appeared totally obscured, but some rays of light pierced the cloud.

By early evening we might have thought the storm had passed, but we knew from weather reports that it had only paused.

.

But my, had the complexion of the land changed in just a day!

This sort of rain is not the kind that leaves pretty little rain drops on all surfaces for me to photograph, but the wetness of the field highlighted the Fall colours that are now quickly coming to the fore.

.

So it wasn’t a completely grey weekend.

  1. We have started to get overnight rain, but nothing on that scale. I have been putting more peanuts out for Tom and Jerry, the squirrels, so that they can start to stock up for winter.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I think when it’s autumn in your part of the world, the chances are slim that it will ever be a grey day. Yes, it’s amazing how quickly the autumn colours made their appearance – so beautiful. And love your stormy skies.
