When Willow goes out she doesn’t need to be supervised as she stays near the house, however when she is finished exploring, she wishes to be ushered in NOW.

So, as I had gone outside myself, I decided to wait, which gave me the occasion to notice that we’d had a very heavy dew overnight.

Dewdrops are more dainty than raindrops. Both are irresistible.

A young Mullein looked quite attractive, thus decorated.

Mullein leaves remind me of celadon china.

Dewdrops are harder to perceive, which is why I am grateful for the iPhone.

In general, I detest ‘phones and mine is not much used for the traditional purpose.

Far more often, I employ it to take photographs. It is good for portraits and close-ups and it also has a wide angle which is useful for rainbows and other expansive subjects.

The iPhone has three pages of apps, half of which I very seldom use, but apart from taking photographs, this small gadget has many other functions:

It tells me the time and the weather forecast (albeit not always reliably).

It identifies birds, insects and plants and also star formations in the night sky, although I have not yet had a chance to use the latter.

It translates foreign languages.

Gives me driving directions.

Access to the Internet and to my email.

Using my phone, I can read WP blogs and also edit and post my own.

One of my apps allows me to use my phone to scan documents – most efficiently.

When I am sitting around in waiting rooms, I have an app that allows me to “doodle”, that is to draw pictures. It is quite distracting, but when I’m not in the mood for that, I can access my latest Kindle book.

None of this will surprise most people and I have no doubt there are many more functions that I don’t know about (or care to), but I list these as a reminder of just how drastically the ordinary telephone has changed since its invention and even since the turn of the century.

When I first, reluctantly, acquired a “smart” phone, I admit that I did not get on with it at all. The wretched thing was always placing calls to people I had no wish to speak with, while refusing to connect me with those to whom I needed to communicate. I began to think I’d reached the stage of being a hopelessly stupid old fart.

Maybe that was why I was constantly dropping my phone, usually on the garage floor which is seriously injurious to such devices. After one such fatal accident, I was obliged yet again to get a new phone and only because I knew the iPhone to include an excellent camera, I decided to try one of the older models, the up-to-date ones costing more than I could justify.

As it was, I felt terribly spendthrift and as I nervously awaited delivery, I wondered if I would be able to cope with the new device. What if I couldn’t figure it out?

But I had had an Apple computer for quite some time and it was immediately as if I understood the iPhone in a way I never could the Android devices. Furthermore, it was more compact and felt more robust. It is more robust. It even fits my hand much better.

It is still a telephone and as such, I do not love it, but I am impressed by it.

In the back of my mind, I’ve been wondering about upgrading to the next out-of-date model. I’ve had this phone for several years now and nothing lasts forever….

But perhaps not yet.
