At the movies

Starlings and grackles hoping for an afternoon top-up

It’s not hard finding something to photograph.

Especially when we’ve had a rain shower:

,

Bird’s foot trefoil
Yucca

Yucca is indestructible and spreads aggressively. We made a serious attempt to cut it back last year which seems only to have offered encouragement.

The flowers are attractive enough and this year there are a lot of buds, but they don’t last long. Unrestrained, the yucca would take over the entire flowerbed. Garden debris gets clogged up in its dense and spiky leaves. Early in the Spring a particular odour alerted us to the sad demise of a possum beneath it.

Grant had the distressing task of extricating the corpse which he took into the woods for re-cycling. Still, it was less unpleasant than the time he discovered a dead raccoon in his window well which is unreachable beneath the porch, or the time he had to wring the neck of a fatally injured wild turkey.

While I could, with difficulty, have managed the former two, I could not physically have achieved the latter, even had I found the willpower for the job. I do not like to be dependent on others, but one has to be realistic.

Here are some very lively creatures:

and while we’re watching movies…

Next time there is an evening like this, I must remember to record the 360 view using my iPhone which has a much wider angle.

.

It was spectacular.

With so many components.

All of them breathtaking.

I had to keep running back outside.

If it wasn’t for stinging insects, I would stay out for the duration.

By 2036, the drama had gone out of it, so I took one last shot and called it a night.

Quite often, I call it a night several times before it sticks.

.

But my next photo was at 0658 the following morning when the Cooper’s hawk came calling.

  1. Ahh, movie day! It was wonderful to watch your videos – animals and nature – there are few things as beautiful as these! The clouds in your video are stunning – thank you so much for sharing not just the photos, but also the video with us.
