Comparative

Fine weather has seen us playing catch-up after a month’s absence of car trips.

As it got light on Thursday, I could see that a photographic opportunity was on offer and we therefore raced through morning chores, because time was of the essence.

.

A surreal light brought up the underlying colour of the tamaracks.

Though it was no match for the phenomenon of Boxing Day 2024, on Thursday morning a combination of freezing temperature and humidity created a similar visual spectacle.

Having expected to never witness the like again, we jumped in the car and rushed out.

.

The tree tops are not out of focus.

They were sheathed in frost.

.

This is a subject I am quite enthusiastic about.

.

Which always leads to an abundance of photographs.

.

As we drove along, the rising Sun lit tree tops.

.

The Moon still hung above the opposite horizon.

.

The folds of the terrain here seem to trap frost.

Just a mile or two away there was little evidence of it.

.

When we saw this spectacle before, we were on our way to Greenwich and assumed that the frost was dissipating as the temperature rose, but this time when we ran out of frost, so to speak, we turned and re-traced our route, finding that it was very much still present, the temperature just a degree of two lower in the shadow of hills.

.

That previous occasion, we had randomly happened to go out, finding ourselves suddenly gasping with delight. It was overwhelming.

.

Perhaps that is why I failed to pay more attention to ground level then.

.

It will certainly have been far more thickly coated that day.

Then, the frost was very much heavier as you can see if you compare the above with photo #3.

Everything that morning was coated like this, which made for quite a sight!

.

Comparatively, this was lack-lustre, yet we enjoyed it.

.

Our short drive supplied quite a few more images that were not specifically frost-related. No doubt I’ll use them at another time.

Meanwhile, we went home to do a few more things before an afternoon outing.

.

Which provided one or two more photographs.

  1. It almost looks as if there’s a misty layer floating over the trees – beautiful. You’ve outdone yourself with these photos – it’s astounding how incredibly beautiful nature can be during a white snowy Winter.
