Morning views

0700/26th December 2025

Boxing Day arrived frigid cold, presenting yet another variation of dawn.

How I shall miss these morning treats, when the days draw out!

.

But it will be a while before the Sun starts rising too early. The longest day dawns about 0415 here. I tend to wake when it gets light and I am often up at 0530, so it wouldn’t be that big a sacrifice to rise earlier. I think it’s just psychologically a shock to the system to do so before 5!

It is my impression that Winter sunrises are more spectacular, but I may just have persuaded myself of this and must make an effort to discover the truth in the New Year!

.

Occasionally an early appointment will see us on the road at dawn and likely heading in the wrong direction to appreciate it. I get whatever images I can, going at speed in dim light.

Sometimes the result is not altogether dreadful.

.

A curve in the road gave us a brief glance at the eastern sky.

.

To me, there is something quite pleasing about the soft focus of dim light.

.

Sort of like impressionist painting.

.

Another curve in the road!

This was when we went to Clifton Park ten days ago and for some reason I never got around to looking at the pictures.

.

I had forgotten what a very pretty morning that was.

.

This was leaving our driveway, early light reflecting off the icy road.

The filter of the windshield completely changed the colour of the sky…

.

…before getting in the car, I took this shot.

.

The Hudson river was frozen over that day.

Early morning pictures, surely much pleasanter than another pointless rant about the iniquities of our times!

  1. You don’t need to wait, Carolyn, as I can tell you the sunrise in the spring is more beautiful and uplifting than any you see in winter. That said, I like your pictures of the sky and clouds. And those icy roads!

  2. Decades of getting up early for shift work took the shine off early mornings for me. Though I did wake up at 4am today, and it was still pitch dark. It took me over an hour to get back to sleep, where I stayed until 8:45. We don’t have it so cold just yet, it is 7C here today, but cold outside in a chilly wind.
    Best wishes, Pete.
