Beyond our ken

1F/-17C that morning.

You always know there’s been a seriously cold snap when you begin to think of temperatures in the range of 25F/-4C as quite mild.

Although I am a fan of Winter, I am not fond of being cold.

.

Yet the appearance of an ice forest makes me forget such discomfort.

.

With the arrival of snow, we thought it prudent to cover the large groundhog holes to avoid falling in them. The wood Grant used provided a surface for the frost.

.

It’s not something I spend a lot of time thinking about, but the formation of frost is fascinating. Temperature, humidity, air density etc etc, but what produces those shapes?

There is no doubt a scientific explanation, but I am content to simply observe.

When there is frost, I must check out the garage windows.

While I was trying to work out a way to photograph them, the Sun crested the horizon.

Which lit things up a treat.

.

Clouds, frost, steam lifting into the air, uncountable ephemeral sights surely go unnoticed every day because they are out of reach or too minute, or simply invisible to human eyes.

.

As much as I would love to see them, I think it is nice to know that there are other sights, other things beyond our ken.

.

To think otherwise would be to hold far too great an opinion of our kind.

.

It is comforting to know that there are things that cannot be tainted by human touch.

To merely know they exist is enough.
