Possum

10th December 2025

Starting out, the possibility of reaching Clifton Park looked promising. The snow had even tapered off and the surgery centre were not expecting problems, so allowing even more extra time than usual, we set off, using the more heavily travelled route, expecting that it was more likely to be kept clear.

.

While in the post office, Grant heard that local schools were closing, causing anxious parents to have scramble. Which is why I thought the surgery centre might have staffing problems, although I suppose if you are in that field of work, you are expected to have emergency fallback plans up your sleeve.

How difficult it must be to raise a family while working to help support them.

.

Cutting through the bottom of Greenwich wasn’t as good, but these were side streets.

.

Still perfectly passable, but now it began to snow again.

.

Back on the main road, the left lane was fine but our side was getting decidedly slidey.

.

Less than halfway to Clifton Park, we decided to abandon this journey as a bad idea. I’ve no doubt we would have got there, but why subject oneself to hazardous driving? Grant has enough to do with managing snow at home. More important, we have cats depending on us!

Besides, I figured that having a few cancellations would perhaps get the surgery centre staff released early. The treatment can wait a week.

.

“Look guys, strange humans. What are they doing here?”

Grant stressed about where to turn around without sliding off the road while I waved at some nosy cows. I could have got a cute picture but thought perhaps it wasn’t the best time to ask the driver to pause.

.

“Meh!”

As we pulled away, I took a hasty shot but the cows had already lost interest!

.

In the seven years I’ve lived here, this is only the second time I’ve had to cancel because of snow and that other time, the lady I was seeing was stuck herself.

.

Those reeds always seem like an enthusiastic crowd waving us on.

In the half hour since we’d passed in the other direction, the road had begun to ice up.

Going home for lunch was definitely the best decision!

.

The snow continued all day and until late last night. A strong wind blew it onto the porch where this morning I found possum paw prints. I avoided treading on them as they seemed like a work of art.

And I have a great fondness for possums.

One of my first possum friends, back in Washington State where they are currently in a state of emergency due to flooding.

  1. I am sorry, Carolyn, to read about the weather in your place, and I am grateful that here we have no winter at the moment, but life is unpredictable; it might change. I love the possum art!

  2. Oh, this looks like real winter weather to me! I don’t think I would enjoy driving in such weather conditions. It would be much better to be inside … and take photos of cute possum footprints!
