Frosty mornings

0800/27th October 2025

The 27th saw us on the way to an early appointment in Salem.

As we passed a pair of lakes I tried to capture an image of mist rising off the water, but even standing still I’m not sure I could have met the challenge. Shame, as it’s a lovely sight.

.

The Sun had only just crested the horizon, throwing its rays across deeply frosted fields.

.

Our route took us through a small wood that was holding tenaciously to its foliage which caught the light and shone like so much gold.

.

Salem is but a short distance up route 22.

Perversely, North Salem is south of Salem, which I know because a friend lived there.

.

Tall straight shag barks make lovely avenues.

.

A few days later, we came this way again and I’ll get to that in due course.

.

As we were right there, we decided to go up to the Salem Art Park.

.

Last time we were here, in June or July, the air was full of smoke. Now it was just mist.

.

They were a little different to mine, but in a flowerbed I found some gaillardia, aka Common blanketflower. They seemed unbothered by the frost and deserved a photograph.

.

The art on display up there shouldn’t be, in my view (and most people’s apparently) but it’s a great place to get an overview of the trees and surrounding hills.

When not shrouded in smoke.

.

That last time also I think, we came because we happened to be nearby and I must say I found it a little distressing because of the harm the smoke must have done to the wildlife.

.

We set off back home where before very long it was getting dark again.

.

And we were treated to a brief fiery sunset.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the beautiful photography of the landscape with or without frost. I hope the smoke will be gone soon, with the rain coming at this time of year.

  2. Autumn in your part of the country deserves its famous reputation, and it is very kind of you to share it with the rest of us. Your photography is equally magnificent!

    1. No, that’s in Massachusetts. There are lots of Salems in the US. By the way I think hunting season has started 🙁 Turkey hunting is supposed to be very limited though I don’t know how carefully the law is enforced. If the turkeys stay around us there are no hunting signs and it is private property, however we haven’t seen them for several days.

  3. Ah, a beautiful sunset – something I don’t often see on your blog. It seems like Autumn just doesn’t want to let go, but one thing is for sure, Summer in your part of the world is over, especially when I look at those frosty mornings.
