Tempus fugit

24th October 2025

Back in the Spring which feels as if it was just last week, we discovered the Mile-Around Woods walking trails in North Bennington, open fields more than woods in fact.

The 6+ miles of trails are part of the Park-McCullough House Association, that maintains them.

.

The house, which was once the residence of a governor, was not open to visitors until after July 4th so we were only able to view the garden.

Having free access to open fields is a rare privilege. We knew that in the Summer months it would be too hot to walk there, but we fully intended to go back again as Fall set in.

.

What with frequent trips to Hidden Valley and explorations to a variety of lakes, not to mention forays to the Canadian border, Mile-Around got put off until it was almost too late.

.

But as we had to go to Bennington last week anyway, we could hardly pass it up.

The house is closed again now until next Summer. Perhaps we’ll visit next year.

Houses are interesting but low priority in my view, unless seriously old.

.

We satisfied ourselves with a quick look at the fields.

In the grey light of that day, the colours were radiant, in the trees that held on to their leaves and in a carpet beneath those that had tossed them off.

.

While we had intended to be here sooner, I actually quite like the look of late Fall.

Especially on a moody grey day.

.

When we came here in the Spring, tall grass waved in the wind.

.

We talked of going early in the morning to watch for birds, but that also didn’t happen.

.

Other things always seemed more important though of course I couldn’t now tell you what.

.

When I took a video of these trees rustling in the wind during our first visit, Fall seemed so very far in the future!

.

And this lovely, solitary tree was just coming into leaf.

Tempus fugit.

  1. Tempus fugit, indeed, Carolyn, nature moves in circles! Even without any leaves, the solitary tree is beautiful! I love old houses, too!
