Babies

17th June 2025

Yet another soggy day, but the lilies offer a splash of colour.

.

And breakfast time brought a new visitor to the patio.

.

Baby Red!

A miniature version of its parent.

And twice as stroppy!

.

Another Baby Red came to the porch and attempted to climb up to the bird feeder, so we decided it must be a descendant of the original Little Red.

Baby Red needs to grow a bit more. I didn’t get its photo but I have many of grandma who was a special friend.

.

We have not yet seen raccoon babies but we often have this sweet face gazing at us through the glass door.

.

I love to watch those long fingers!

.

The woodpecker population appears to have increased.

.

One afternoon I had a chance to capture two at once.

.

A wren nested in the garage this year and I enjoyed hearing her chatter when I went to get the suet feeder, but her babies fledged and they seem to have departed for the wider world.

.

If I remember correctly, June is a good month for spiderwebs.

Mostly it’s been too wet this year and the examples I got yesterday were modest.

.

But there is beauty in simplicity.

.

It is predicted that next week we shall have sunshine and hot weather which is much more usual for this time of year.

But we have a wet week ahead.

Supposedly.

  1. The baby reds are gorgeous! We have had a large grey squirrel visiting our garden for some time now, and I spotted him/her yesterday, rummaging for things he/she might have buried. The heatwave continues here, with no rain forecast for a week or more, and temperatures up to 32C by Sunday.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Oh, don’t talk about soggy – it’s wet and miserable here in Cape Town (typical winter weather that I’ve almost forgotten about). It’s lovely to see a Baby Red – they are so adorable! And isn’t it amazing how comfortably the woodpeckers can hang and eat from the suet feeders!
