It appears, so I am advised, that the groundhog burrow in front of our kitchen window has been abandoned, which I wouldn’t have realised as these little faces still pop out regularly.

However, Grant spends more time outside and says they run along beneath the bushes and disappear down a selection of other tunnels.

We know for certain that two other burrows on our property have been abandoned, including the one Scooter used two years ago, which was taken over by foxes.

.

“It made a comfy home for us!”

.

“My bruvers are timid.”

“Me, I like ‘sploring!”

.

One of my greatest pleasures is to witness the joy of a young animal discovering its world.

.

The innocence.

.

The naughtiness.

.

When Mum catches them out…

“Where do you think you’re going?”

.

“I’m going to tan your hide!”

.

.

Mum rounded Junior up then came back to check out that interesting smell she’d caught wind of.

.

Something good to eat, apparently.

.

Next day, JR was out again. This time, he rushed down to meet his mum, or…

.

“Hey, JR! Stop at the bottom of the hill!”

“Kits!”

.

“Are they gone yet?”

.

Meanwhile, Mrs Groundhog had finished her breakfast and moved on to refreshing her nest.

.

“Messy little buggers, my hoglets!”

.

And an opportunistic raccoon grabbed the leftovers.

  2. “I’m going to tan your hide” – that’s one of the funny things I’ve heard in a long time 😂. Beautiful pictures of the foxes (and all the other wild animals) – what a privilege to see it all happening right in front of your eyes.
