Bar the arrival of a hurricane, it is hard to imagine a more foul day than this for a local bicycle race, yet when we went out briefly, the competitors were assembling in the village.

They deserve credit for determination!

On the way home from Greenwich, we stopped at the weir…

.

Three days ago.

The river was already running high.

.

We’ve experienced much heavier rain since living here, but never for such an extended period.

Grant measured the water flowing off our hill at 2 gallons a minute and it has been running at that rate for five days.

From tomorrow we are promised two sunny dry days, followed by – 6 more wet ones.

.

Paddy fields definitely!

We are lucky to live on a hill.

.

Lucky to be able to choose to live on a hill. Not everyone has such good fortune.

The solution in Asia is to build houses on stilts but even they are sometimes swept away, the price often paid for access to water.

.

One of those many things people like me take for granted, like electricity, food and a roof over my head.

While I have certainly seen extreme poverty, one cannot appreciate such a situation without personally experiencing it. I do wish, though, that our politicians had more imagination and empathy.

.

What I can appreciate is rare glimpses of blue sky that seem to be rationed currently.

.

Wednesday looked so promising!

.

An enchanting sort of day.

.

Despite lurking clouds.

.

We drove south along the west bank of the Hudson, heading for Cohoes.

Cohoes is the Algonquian name for pine tree.

.

We had been there in October when we were close to drought conditions, so we were interested to see the contrast.

Here the Hudson flows over the Cohoes Company Dam built in 1866.

The falls are not high but still impressive.

.

By this time, rain was back.

Time to head home for tea.

.

Instead of crossing the Hudson at Stillwater we continued up the west bank and found that Riverfront Park had re-opened.

.

Despite being a bit damp.

.

With that, we set off for home…

.

…where we were about to incur more demerits from Dee Dee for yet another late lunch.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the lovely trip along the river, with the beautiful study of the sky and clouds. I live too up the hill, saved from flooding. Your cats shouldn’t be waiting for their lunch while you are gallivanting for hours!

  2. The comparison photos really show the differences. I am sorry that you are experiencing such dismal weather. We are enjoying sunshine in Beetley, and it got up to 70F earlier today.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. The comparison photos are extraordinary!
Dee Dee does not seem impressed, however! 😾
Thank you for sharing your travels.

  4. Dee Dee looks peeved.
That weir was running fast! I hope you had some sunny days. Here, the weather has also been erratic. We’ve had tons of rain, which is unusual for autumnal weather, which is typically dry.

  5. I love your comparison photos – one easily forgets what a certain place looked like in winter/summer, and that’s when it’s nice to pull out your own photos and compare! Haha, Dee Dee doesn’t look impressed at all … but I’m sure she’ll quickly forget after receiving a lovely meal (until the next late lunch that is) 😉.
