What’s left

15th January 2025

.

Lily was rudely awakened from a deep sleep this morning and carted off to the vet for a follow-up.

“I’m fine! All better!” she growled, though she rode in silence.

Stoic that she is.

.

Certain cats in the past wailed so pitifully I was afraid other motorists would think someone was being abducted.

One poor little love could not tolerate a car ride. I learned to travel with a clean-up kit because she let go at both ends. Eventually I had a vet 5 minutes away, just close enough.

With an empty bladder, Lily was unable to provide a specimen for analysis, so she is spending the day. Hopefully she will come home with a good report.

.

Following Lily’s mid-morning appointment, we had some shopping to do and it being a fine day, we meandered which is always pleasant, but leaves me short of time.

.

Everyone says it, so it must be true: in childhood time drags, but as you age it speeds up.

It’s not an illusion. It’s about getting closer to the end of the roll. When you’re young, you cover a much longer distance in the same amount of time.

.

That type of thought makes my head hurt, liking thinking about the Universe.

It’s why I stick to simple stuff like building ice castles.

Though it fought me this morning. The blocks didn’t want to stick and I had a partial collapse of one pillar.

My fingers got so cold, for the first time I had to come in to warm them.

Then, when I went back out, the repaired pillar collapsed again.

It had different ideas for itself.

.

Instead of stirring in the colouring yesterday, I left it to set, but it seems that the formation of ice has a blending effect, so there were no pretty patterns.

Shame. I expected millefiori.

.

It doesn’t look, or feel as if Spring is only weeks away.

.

Which suits me.

.

Winter is a silent season.

.

Sounds are muted.

Like the crunch of tires on snow.

.

There are no voices to be heard, as people stay indoors.

We don’t see many folk about up here, but in warm weather the sound of human activity carries from the farms.

.

The older I get, the less I like human voices, but there can never be too much birdsong.

You’ll not hear me complain of a howling wind or the sound of thunder.

The drumming of rain.

.

Nor do I tire of winter landscapes.

.

When warm weather returns, I’ll find something to like.

.

Our small friends emerging from their hibernation to entertain us with their antics.

.

The return of migrating birds.

The fresh faces of Spring flowers.

.

But till then, I’ll enjoy what’s left of Winter.

  1. Hi Carolyn. Just trying to ‘get back behind the wheel’ and looking forward to catching up with your life. Currently I can’t seem to see any of your beautiful photos, so I have some work to do. It may involve petrol a match and the wherewithal to buy a new laptop. No idea where the latter will come from…

  2. Perhaps due to being unwell for so long, I am really feeling the cold this year. My wife is complaining about the house being too hot because I have the heating set to 21C from 8am-10pm, but any less than that and my fingers and feet feel cold. I may have to see a doctor about that once I have the results of the recent tests for something completely different. When I had a cat in the 1970s, she didn’t like the car, and almost always vomited in her travel box on the way to the Vet. That changed as she got older though, and she sat calmly.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Feeling cold is miserable. Although I like winter, I don’t like being cold except for short invigorating periods with a warm house to return to. My parents kept their house very warm which I found uncomfortable but at least latterly they had given up smoking so there was no fug! I hope you will get to the bottom of your medical issues soon and feel better. It’s been too long and I know it can get one down.

  3. I wonder how happy Lily was to be left at the vet (hopefully she doesn’t hold a grudge against you guys for this). You say Spring is weeks away? That means our Summer is coming to an end soon – I don’t know if I’m ready for that! Although Winter is clearly your favourite season, I know you will find beauty in every other season as well.
