Places and times

0622/12th November 2024

.

Last Tuesday seems an eternity ago..

It was a bright day here with the temperature topping out at 72F/22C which was a little unsettling, snow being much more usual on this date.

.

Unexpectedly, we had to go out…

By-passing road works approaching Greenwich.

.

Where the wraparound tree is now fully exposed.

Greenwich has been in chaos all over the summer with major excavations to lay new drains.

See the dark patch in the road where the ditch was covered over.

.

Grant had received a parcel that arrived broken, almost in two.

The sender required it to be returned, which necessitated a trip to Saratoga where the nearest UPS store is located.

.

Taking residential streets to avoid traffic.

Twelve cars, probably!

.

Actually, Saratoga is a fairly major destination, being a hub for thoroughbred horse racing.

.

Saratoga Spa State Park includes mineral baths, a pool complex and the Saratoga Performing Arts Centre.

.

Saratoga Automobile Museum exhibits vintage models and racing cars.

.

Passing by the race course.

.

Finding our way back out of Saratoga, we meandered home…

.

…enjoying blissfully empty roads.

.

Admiring the look of late Fall.

.

Eventually, we found ourselves travelling along the Hudson but on the opposite side to our usual River Road.

.

An earlier trip to Cohoes had brought us back this way and we’d noticed a park that we’d made note of.

Obviously we were meant to visit.

.

These parts saw a lot of activity in the Revolutionary War.

.

At Stillwater River Front Park, we walked by the Hudson.

.

Enjoying the trees.

.

Sycamores…

.

…in the afternoon sun.

Then, as chance would have it…

.

We found ourselves there again yesterday.

.

It was a much cooler, but not cold day.

The park is opposite the red barn on the other side of the river, where we usually turn onto Wright Road.

.

I am an admirer of rivers.

Grant insisted on photographic proof.

.

We wandered all the way around.

Exercise devices surprised me since I could picture children easily coming to grief on such tempting contraptions.

.

As well as the beautiful sycamores, the park is ringed with river birches, notable by their bark.

.

If you enjoy a place, you should make a point of visiting at different times of day as well as different seasons and types of weather.

Now that we have found this park, we will certainly do so.

.

Yesterday’s sky was temperamental.

.

Leaving the park, we carried on to Schuylerville, passing one of Philip Schuyler’s homes. He seems to have had several.

Philip Schuyler was an American general in the Revolutionary War and also a US Senator.

.

The General Philip Schuyler House was built in 29 days in November 1777. This home is now part of Saratoga National Historical Park. During the American Revolution, the British Army occupied this area. The beautiful home of American General, Philip Schuyler, was burned to ground. Following the surrender of the British, General Schuyler lost no time in replacing his home. He rebuilt this house using much of the glass, nails, locks and hinges salvaged from the burned home.

.

Then we sailed on home to provide late cat lunches.

“Demerits…”

  1. 22c! We are lucky to see 10C at this time of year. That’s a July temperature in Beetley. I referenced Saratoga Springs in the photo-prompt story after you sent me the photo of the abandoned boat. My research showed me it was not that far from you.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Saratoga seems like a place I’d like to see (with its 12 car traffic). I love the tree-lined roads and beautiful photo of you by the river (also a favourite place for me). I always find so many little things to take pictures of when we walk along a river … and soon hopefully ON the river.
Maybe I can let the cat out of the bag now (figuratively speaking, of course) … Berto bought us early Christmas gifts that are currently in transit on their way to us. We are getting new kayaks so we can enjoy the river properly this holiday!!
