During a very light rain shower yesterday, I went outside to retrieve a bucket which occasioned me to see this most unusual rainbow.
Have you ever seen one this small?
Perfect, but with such a shallow arc.
.
Not long after, Grant noticed two foxes out by the old wall. Peanut was no doubt one of them.
The other, seen here was much paler in the face and we believe it was her cub.

.

They are lovely creatures that we always enjoy watching, but the behaviour we saw last night was something we have never witnessed before.
Without any great knowledge of fox lore, it seemed to us that they were playing. Certainly, they were not aggressive.
.
They moved so fast it was hard to record, but you’ll see what I mean.
Maybe it’s part of Junior’s education?
He ends up getting a bit cheeky and she tells him off!
.

All of this was later in the day.
We started out by getting lost on the way home from Greenwich.
.
What? The car could find its way home on autopilot!
Well yes, but you see that orange sign?
We wanted to avoid it a second time.

.

Unlike where we lived in Washington State, there are alternatives and we had been wanting to explore this road.
“Let’s go that way”, I said.
“We’ve got frozen food.” the response.
But as I pointed out, it wasn’t as if it was 90 degrees out and it wouldn’t take us much longer.
.
Nor would it, if the man hadn’t taken us on an extended tour of the countryside.
Taking left turns where I thought right would have been a better option. The car’s compass confirmed we were heading north, away from home.
Frozen food suddenly not a concern, apparently!

.

After some time we came upon a familiar church.
.
Notice the bird?

The tour continued…

.

…along shady lanes…

.

…lots of those!

.
We passed an old farm that has been refurbished by Amish settlers. It is amazing how they turn properties around and refreshing to see.
Notice another bird?
I often find one in my photos.

.

“See? There’s that radio tower!”
As I recalled, it was some distance from home, but so what?
.
I was enjoying the ride.

.

When we found ourselves way the hell back up at Fort Edward, I did wonder if perhaps I ought to have brought my passport, but presumably we would turn back if we reached the border.
.

.

Anyway, we know the way home from Fort Edward.
.
But there seemed no intention of taking the direct route.

.

A day like this, why would you?

.
There were hundreds more lanes to traverse.

.

Our impromptu meander saw us passing Summit Lake.
A place we normally make a point of going to.
.
The glorious Fall of ’22 spoiled us forevermore.
But I will never not enjoy it.

.

We began to see places we had passed, some time back.
.
Sure enough, we were back at that church.

.

I think we may have even scared the same turkeys twice.
They ran away too fast for a photo.
.
Red the prevailing colour!

Even the soil looks red.

.

Touring local farms was all very well, but soon we were headed right back to Greenwich with its roadworks.
Which was what launched this great crusade.
.
So we hung a left to reroute through Salem.
Ordinary Salem. There’s a North and a South.
Though North is south of South.
Somewhat confusingly.

.

Back on route 22 there was no further excuse for going wrong.
.
By now even I was concerned about the frozen food.

.

Dead Lake is 10 minutes from home.
Give or take a putt-putt.
The foxes are just adorable!
Only another 2 hours and you would have needed that passport!
This is a very interesting video of the foxes Carolyn. They move pretty fast and they either played with each other or put on a show especially for you. Ah, who cares about frozen food in the car when the scenery is so beautiful. Oh, and just a side note: Our passports are always with us … even if we just drive to the store. You never know if you’re going to need it all of a sudden! Lovely photos.
Had to laugh at the foxes! We have always had them on our property, they have made four large dens that they rotate occupation in. We have had the pleasure of watching kits play, steal our dogs’ squeaky toys, poop on the pool cover & greet us at the patio doors. They are absolutely delightful creatures! You are lucky to have them as they are great rodent hunters.
A beautiful day, showcased by lovely photos. And a bonus fox video!
Best wishes, Pete.
