The BIG DAY

0830/30th July 2024

.

This morning saw us dropping Little Man off at Cambridge Valley Vet.

It’s his Big Day.

Poor little scrap.

.

Because he’s such an expert at disappearing and because we had to withhold food from him, we shut him in a locked room last night.

Oh, the wailing when he heard us moving about this morning!

.

Little Man’s arrival was so unexpected.

One morning he emerged from under the hedge where our groundhog family lives.

We’ve seen stray cats passing through on occasion, but never one so young. When he appeared to be camping we brought him in to keep him safe, fully expecting someone to come looking for him.

No such person turned up so we took him to the vet for a health check and vaccinations and since then we’ve been waiting for the day when he was to get neutered.

As he is apparently staying this was a necessity, but we’ve dreaded it, remembering the demise of a sweet cat following a dental procedure.

It’s not something that happens often, but it’s always in the back of our minds.

.

It’s why we haven’t given him a proper name and why I haven’t said much about him lately, as if there is any way to protect yourself from a possible loss.

The fact is, we have fallen in love with this little lad, despite the complications of suddenly adding a kitten to our group of seniors.

Little Man was frightened when we handed him over to the clinic staff, but I got a call not long ago to say that he has woken up and is doing well. We will collect him in an hour or so and put him back in the closed room so we can keep an eye on him at least until tomorrow.

.

As usual, we arrived at the clinic too early so while we waited I took more pictures of their wonderful flowers.

.

.

.

The clinic receptionist decides on the flowers and watering them appears to be the first order of the day for the nursing staff.

A local lady comes by regularly to keep everything looking nice.

.

It makes a difference, bringing your pet to a place that is cheerful and welcoming.

A good appearance leads one to believe that these are caring people, that they may be trusted to care equally for their patients.

We have certainly always found this to be so.

.

Leaving Washington there were few regrets, but our veterinary clinic there was wonderful and I knew we would miss them. Doctor Deb got me through so many losses. You develop a unique bond with such people.

She also had a wonderful way with all our animals.

But we felt welcomed here by our new team and we are most grateful for that.

  1. I feel sure he will be fine, and the neutering might calm him down from wandering and hiding. Hooray for the new member of your extended family!
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Your “little man” is so adorable! 😻
So happy to hear all went well for him today.
I loved the video and lovely pictures…… thank you!

  3. Oh, I am so happy for Little Man to have that surgery behind him (so to speak) and very happy for you that you can now relax and allow yourself to get attached! What a fun toy that is! I was as entranced as he seems to be – thanks for sharing him with us via video.

  4. Love the video of Little Man – he knows how to play while lying down! And I’m glad it went well with his big operation … yes, apparently he is staying! Oh, and the flowers are lovely – made my day!

    1. It funny how sometimes names just present themselves…like Panther…it was what he was, a little black…Panther. Cisco had his name by the time I got him home after following a Sysco truck, but it totally suited him.

  5. How do your girls like him? Does he bother them when he wants to play? I know dogs & pups go through adjustments but have no experience with cats.

    1. Like? Er, no, not exactly! But they have stopped hissing and/or running away. He plays a lot with the feather toy and then goes to his hiding place for a prolonged nap. He is very endearing (to us at least). The girls have had so many changes…they always settle down in the end.

  6. This post just made my day…………from the breathtakingly beautiful Petunias to the announcement that Lil Man is all set to be a member of your loving family. Can’t wait to hear of how he and the ladies start to interact with each other.
