“My” song

0658/15th December 2023

It’s funny how certain situations can spontaneously bring to mind long forgotten songs.

In Pete’s case, as he recently posted, it was rain.

My song is a bit different.

.

From 1976, it’s a song I didn’t like and never wasted two thoughts about, but like so many annoying things, it wedged itself somewhere in the depths of my brain.

It was apparently naughtily suggestive.

Stick with me and all will be revealed.

.

Late yesterday I received word that a prescription had at last been filled and when I told Grant he said:

“Let’s go!”

.

Normally we do running around early, leaving us the rest of the day free. It’s a habit, that’s all.

So while there is no particular reason for it, we don’t usually find ourselves “abroad” in late afternoon.

.

There’s always the chance at this time of day, of getting stuck behind a school bus.

Stop, start, stop.

If kids could be persuaded to actually walk a few steps, you could eliminate half those stops which are within sight of each other.

.

School buses are on my hate list for various reasons.

Yesterday we did not meet one.

.

Charging along route 372, it was immediately noticeable how different the world looked at that time of day.

With a small covering of snow and just the right amount of cloud.

.

.

When I was a kid, people used to talk about “lighting- up time”, which was when drivers were supposed to turn their lights on.

Around here and I think generally in the US, many people keep their lights on all the time.

Is this so elsewhere?

.

The pros and cons of this may no doubt be debated at length.

I was never any good at debate, not even in my own mind. In a term paper once I set off to make a case for repealing the death penalty only to find at the end that I had changed my mind.

There are always at least two sides to any argument and there are no absolutes. It doesn’t make you wishy-washy that you can see two points of view.

.

The world would surely be a happier place if we could at least consider other people’s ideas and values?

When I was young I had the extraordinary notion when I voted, that I should select the option that was likely to benefit the majority, even if it didn’t necessarily suit me!

.

In Greenwich it was doggy playtime.

Those yellow signs inhibited a decent photo.

.

As we turned back to Cambridge the Sun was sinking.

.

The sky was getting a look.

.

“Shall we take a spin?”

asked the driver.

.

I rarely say no.

.

.

.

A route we take often.

.

It’s never looked quite like this.

.

.

.

Just a few of the photos I took on the way back from Greenwich.

Once again, I’m going to abandon you halfway.

The song I mentioned?

“Afternoon delight”.

Starland vocal band. 1976.

  1. Lovely photos of your picturesque home and vicinity.
No, in Australia, people turn on headlights much too late and some even forget to turn them on when it’s dark. So dangerous. It seems the further north you go in QLD, the worse it is – red-neck State!
    I remember that song!

  2. I don’t recall that song from 1976, which might be a good thing, as I don’t want it stuck in my head.
I continue to be impressed by how clear your roads are, despite the snow. Where we live, they wouldn’t be considered to be roads ‘important’ enough to be cleared by the authorities.
Most cars here (since around 2010) now have front and back lights that are always on once you start the engine. Not the headlights though, just smaller lights that mean you can see the cars coming on dull days.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. Our bakkie’s lights automatically go on when we started it, but not my Jimny. So, we just put the Jimny’s lights on towards sunset or when the sky is dark during the day. I like your photos in the late afternoon, they do indeed make the landscape look completely different. It’s actually beautiful! I don’t know the song and had to google it. It’s actually not that bad … I enjoyed the attire of the singers of those years in the YouTube video.
