Cheeky

0743/5th October 2023

This day the morning mist was sepia.

It fits well, into the gallery of images I’ve been collecting of late.

It’s a very brown sort of period.

.

There is, of course, a place for brown as our friend Zoomer demonstrates.

Zoomer is a little brown furry creature that is stocking up for winter. Herewith:

“Oh, I fink I’m going to be sick. No, no. Mind over matter. Yup. I fink I’ve got it!”

How many nuts can a chipmunk stuff ?

.

After visiting with the pintails on Tuesday, we decided to see where the road would take us.

It had a nice feel to it.

Not all places or roads do.

.

.

.

Each season, I think the world is so beautiful that I will be sad when it’s over, but I have only to scroll through my photo albums to be reminded that beauty is in all seasons.

.

Each drive that we take, we pass small cemeteries. The countryside is dotted with them. Many are tiny, attached to old farms.

By European standards they are not old, but some of these cemeteries date back to the 1700’s.

.

A few months ago we went up to Woodland’s Cemetery here in Cambridge. It dates only to 1858 but is quite large, covering a sizeable hill.

It is easy to park there and the view is spectacular. It was so peaceful walking among the graves, beneath great trees.

.

Who were those people? Sometimes, the headstones allude to their stories or to their character.

What does it mean that a stranger pays respect so many years after? I used to think it important for there to be a place that loved ones could visit.

.

Now I think it important only to be remembered.

My aunt Kay lies on a hillside in Maine, beside her husband. I have never been back. It is hard to reach or I would go.

I carry Kay in my heart but I am glad that she rests in a place of such peace and beauty.

As if it makes any difference.

.

We had found Sandgate

.

Without seeing a marker for the Stateline, we had crossed into Vermont.

The Green Mountain State.

A crow welcomed us.

.

.

Vermont is one of my favourite states, out of those I have visited.

So why didn’t I move there?

At the time I didn’t know enough about it, but it is only a stone’s throw from the place I chose and we can visit easily.

.

Although it’s just a short ride, Fall arrives sooner in Vermont.

.

But most of the leaves were still attached.

.

Travelling these golden roads

so good for the soul.

It’s a very hilly state.

With windey roads.

.

Lots of streams.

.

My sort of “mountains”.

While I love the grandeur of snow-peaked mountains, I am happier living in these hills which afford you a wide open sky.

.

When you get out from under the trees.

Someone didn’t get the brown memo!

.

It was a sensational day!

.

Deciding on a left turn, we found ourselves back on that nice road we had left a short while before.

We had just found another nice excursion to add to our growing list.

.

.

This time we saw the State marker.

New York is the Empire State but recently I heard it referred to as:

The Vampire State.

A reference to taxes, I assume.

.

No one I know has adopted a road.

As nice as it is, I don’t think I could afford it.

.

We came to a place where you can park and go fishing in the Battenkill River.

Only once did I go fishing. I was persuaded to call in sick that day. We went sailing and pretty soon I felt sick.

A fish took my bait but I felt bad and put it back.

.

There were a lot of cars in the parking lot but everyone was down at the river.

The little row of trees was very pretty and the still-early sunrays were just touching the nearby hill.

.

.

Soon, we turned off to head for home in time for another cat snack.

You know how nervous they get about missing a meal.

Across the tracks.

.

Past fields of soy.

.

Later that afternoon I noted changes in our little corner. At this time of year the colours seem to change before your very eyes.

It is quite special.

  1. So beautiful photos and the chipmunk with cheeks full on nuts made me smiling. Thank you for sharing your photos and story with us!

  2. I don’t have to travel far for my foliage fix. In fact I just turn around to find it right behind me when I write my blog. Stunning foliage from the inner courtyard in this care facility in Seattle. Lucky me!

  3. Gosh, Zoomer has to be careful – his little stomach is going to burst! Great photos of him in action. It’s true what you say Carolyn, every season has its own beauty – and at your place every season is such a beautiful picture! That shocking red bush/tree by the side of the road (is it still in Vermont?), it’s stunning! Thanks for the ride – enjoyed it very much 🍂.
