Favourite colours

24th March 2026 Chimney Point, VT.

Approaching the Lake Champlain Bridge at Chimney Point, we debated crossing back into New York and driving home down the other side of the lake.

There is probably a nice view from the bridge but one is not encouraged to stop mid span.

In any event, we chose to remain in Vermont.

.

We were immediately pleased with that decision.

.

Just beyond the bridge, hundreds of Canada geese and a few mergansers enjoyed the bright morning sunshine.

How do you know if a goose is enjoying itself?

Well, it certainly sounded like contentment to us:

.

(The photographer needs a great deal more practice with video.)

.

In its winter colours, the lake looked serene.

.

These just happen to be my favourite colours.

.

Driving on, we found more geese in a small cove.

.

They were making their way out onto the lake.

.

Perhaps they’d got off to a late start.

.

A mallard couple seemed to see them off.

.

Lake Street soon led us back to route 22A, Vermont’s parallel to our own route 22.

.

Heading home, we faced the light, so these next two images are from earlier, going north.

The snow geese had eluded us again, but we’d enjoyed all the other birds and these outings are never a disappointment.

.

There are so many other sights to appreciate.

Trees often get photographed, but when I saw the image I’d captured here, I rather liked how the early light had also caught the car’s exhaust, offering an impression of its motion.

.

Back in Cambridge we passed the livestock market where they have auctions on Tuesdays, but it seemed fairly quiet.

.

“Oh, so you’re back?”

We’d left plenty of refreshments for the dear darlings, but that didn’t stop them nosing around to see what else they could wangle.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the beautiful post with an excellent video of the happy geese, the blue sky, and the interesting tree! Nice to be greeted on return by a beautiful face!

  2. I have faith that you will see the Snow Geese one day. Meanwhile, you got some great photos, including the solo tree and the moving car.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. Ok, Canada Geese is definitely the most popular bird on this road trip! And although I also wanted to see the snow geese, I’m quite satisfied with what you have shown me in these last few posts. A lovely road trip – although it seems not everyone at home thinks the same 😉.
