Sweet sounds

0731/8th March 2026

Saturday night as I was reading there came a sound I’d not heard for many weeks:

Torrential rain – a good sound.

The cats were not advised of the time change, so Lily’s wake-up call did not occur until 0530 on Sunday, at which hour the day was just unveiling itself.

It was no surprise to see dense mist rising from the snow.

.

The “wheelbarrow” has finally reappeared.

Searching for photographs, I picked my way through mud puddles on the driveway, but I was hard put to find images worth capturing.

.

Mist often provides opportunities, but that morning it was thick and gloomy.

Ice is another favourite, but in the above condition it too was unappealing.

Not an inspiring start, however while I was out another sound tickled my eardrum, causing me to scutinise the bird I’d noticed at the top of the waiting room tree:

.

Sure enough, it was a red-winged blackbird, our first returnee!

Soon after, a brown-headed cowbird came briefly to a feeder, also a first.

These birds travel in flocks of which there was no sign, but before long Grant called out that several more red-wings had arrived and also some grackles.

They brought with them another fine afternoon, further proof that we should not allow our weather forecasts to depress us!

Red-winged blackbird calls.

There is something particularly sweet about the first birdsong of Spring.

.

Here’s another sweet sound:

  1. Nothing is as wonderful as the first sign of spring, Carolyn! Good to see the birds arriving at their favourite restaurant! And the down chorus is indeed a sweet sound…

  2. You have given such wonderful sounds for us in this post, Carolyn! The music is soothing. God-made sounds (those of the chirping birds) and manmade sounds – it’s beautiful.
