Love story

Simon and Lady Grey

As a break from Winter, I thought I’d give you a very short, sweet love story.

It was mentioned here briefly once before, but then I was unable to come up with these photographs, the reason being they were not in my possession, as it turns out.

This morning Grant suddenly produced them.

.

Simon and Lady Grey didn’t feature when I wrote recently about Yeti’s Kitty Suites because their story predated that time. I came to know them through my early cat rescue activities.

That same involvement was how I met Grant who was busily assisting cats too.

His ground-level apartment had a direct view of an endless parade of stray cats that came in search of food. Before long, several had moved indoors with him.

Simon, however, was an incorrigible old ruffian who proudly wore multiple battle scars.

.

Including a seriously compromised left eye.

Clearly, he could not move in with Grant’s already over-large population, but he needed medical attention and he proved to be most agreeable to humans. Simon needed a home, though being a beat-up cat with medical issues, we weren’t optimistic of finding him one.

.

Simon was the colour of dark chocolate with emerald eyes. He was a love.

Matters were further complicated when we were locked out of the “rescue” where we’d been volunteering. The owner was apparently more interested in collecting than helping them and she didn’t like it that we were attempting to re-home her cats.

So she shut the door and changed the lock. It was heart-breaking because we’d fallen in love with those cats. Luckily, though, Simon had only just arrived on the scene and was not incarcerated with them.

.

One of the other volunteers was a lady of means and she had a spare house which she turned into a new, actual rescue, Simon becoming one of the first intake, in a room of his own because of his anti-social attitude.

We had a schedule that allowed cats from different rooms to be let out to roam downstairs at programed times and under supervision, we allowed those who we believed might be compatible to meet.

Which is how, presumably, Simon encountered Lady Grey.

.

Lady Grey was a dignified senior girl whose owner sadly had died.

Elderly cats are no easier to place than tough street cats.

The duo were the least likely of cats to bond, yet they somehow came face-to-face one day and gave new meaning to the term love at first sight.

From that day, they were never apart.

.

They were frequently to be seen having philosophical exchanges.

Lady Grey turned the old bruiser into a gentleman-cat.

All of which was lovely, but if finding a home for either one was difficult, the likelihood of their being adopted together seemed well nigh impossible.

Which just proves that miracles can happen.

.

Simon and Lady Grey were adopted together and went travelling in a camper which seemed to suit them very well.

It is my favourite story from those days.
