Disorientation

19th January 2026

Winter light casts dark shadows on snow. Something else that appeals to me.

Maybe because I like things to be clearly defined.

Although…grey areas allow for varied interpretation which can be useful.

But I have always preferred to know where I stand, even if I don’t like it.

.

It is partly why I liked having gay guy friends.

You can have a good time without worrying about silly mind games.

.

Tracks in the snow. I like those too.

Having resumed sightseeing this week, Grant also fell back into his routine from last summer of doing twirlies, which is to say getting a bit lost, making sudden turns that lead to disorientation.

Thus we unexpectedly arrived at the water lily pond.

.

There were no flowers, of course, but the beaver lodges stood out from the ice.

We drove around some more until it was getting late and we still needed to do some shopping. Bored with Greenwich, I plotted Bennington into the GPS which suggested that we were an hour away.

So, boring Greenwich it had to be.

.

via Salem.

Salem, NY. No witch trials here.

.

Anyway, the drive from Salem was a change.

.

And that day scenery everywhere was enjoyable.

.

The sort of snow you can’t complain about.

.

The most recent deposit is less popular.

.

A couple of days later, fine weather lured us out again.

.

Another of Grant’s twirlies got us completely turned around.

Under a blanket of snow everything looks different but then I realised we were driving east on a road we usually take in the other direction which in itself can be disorientating.

Before long Grant spotted a strange shape moving across the whiteness….

.

One doesn’t expect to come upon a pig out for a walk in midwinter.

.

Yet there she was.

She snuffled at us then plodded off on her way.

Clearly she knew where she was going even if we didn’t.

  1. It’s interesting that I thought roads in the snow must always look the same, but that’s not how I experience it in your photos … on the contrary, it always looks different! And a pig in the snow! I don’t think I’ve seen that on your blog before 😯.
