Long ago, when I lived with my aunt on Long Island she talked of summer vacations she and her husband had taken years before, driving up to Canada. She had mentioned Ausable Chasm and it was lodged in the back of my mind when I moved to Upstate New York, but I’d dismissed it as being too far for a visit.
We passed the exit for Ausable on Friday, twenty minutes before reaching Point au Roche.
It is described as the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks.

Rock climbing and tubing might be a little ambitious for me, but armed with my hiking stick I feel I could manage at least a part of the walk.
Something to think about, anyway.
There is also an antique car museum there, less appealing but interesting.

Leaving Point au Roche, we returned south on I-87, viewing the same scenery but in reverse and in different light, the Sun being now over the yardarm.

The colours appeared brighter in afternoon light.

It has always been my impression that return journeys from visits to previously unknown places seem much shorter. Is it a matter of familiarity with destination and route?

Southbound there was a little additional traffic, but there were never more than just a few cars on the road or an occasional truck and a tour bus or two.
Companies that run tour buses must be suffering at the moment. It has always been a fairly big business in the US, but tourism is predictably way down.

We followed the white car the whole way.

In what seemed like no time, we waved goodbye to the Audi and turned off the interstate at Wilton to make our way back to Cambridge.

You would expect Fall to be more advanced further north, but this year the reverse seemed to be true. Perhaps the drought has been more severe here.

So, we did not see geese of any description, but we’d encountered a sandpiper and some wax wings.
We’d come home with a bag of apples for the deer and we’d had a nice day out.
Furthermore, we’d explored new territory and come away with ideas for the future.
So, as they say in South Africa, we had no complaints.

Yes, you’re right, the colours are so much brighter on your return trip … it’s definitely not boring to travel the same road more than once! The little squirrel in your own yard is a welcome sight at the end of a long road trip, isn’t it? Indeed … no complaints from me 😉.
I hope you get back there with your hiking stick and camera. I would also like to see photos of the car museum, if you can spare the time.
