Window watch

0626/16th September 2025

In the past few days I’ve taken rather a lot of pictures, some of them not too awful, but today I thought I would share these…

Pink has been a predominant colour of late.

.

Mornings are often rosy.

.

And sometimes a fairly ordinary looking evening sky begins to glow.

.

Then it changes rapidly.

.

And summons me outside.

.

To the consternation of wildlife occasionally, I regret to say.

Though I don’t imagine they retreat far.

.

This morning’s version was more dramatic.

.

It included contrails and a New Moon.

.

The vibrant colour soon begins to fade as the Sun rises.

.

Bringing with it morning mist and today, something else beside…

.

Drying breakfast dishes, I caught sight of the above.

.

There’s nothing extraordinary about refracted light but in my experience, it usually disappears within minutes. Today it did not and I went outside for a better look.

.

Where I got an improved view.

.

Of the sun rays and morphing contrails.

.

As I watched that spectacle, I noticed that the refraction was forming an arc around the Sun.

Which struck me as really rather pleasing.

It is called a sun-dog, I believe, or parhelion.

.

Back inside, minutes later, the dishes had dried themselves and I continued to watch from the window that affords me so many uplifting sights.

It is only fair to share them as I have not always been thus blessed and therefore appreciate their value.

  1. You are blessed indeed, Carolyn, to have such extraordinary sky views from your window! I love the new moon and the morning pink hue, but sun-dog is the new name for the image, and I am grateful to learn something new.

  2. You have better skies than we have been (not) enjoying in Beetley since Sunday. All we have had is ‘battleship grey’, replaced by ‘almost dark’ at 4pm during torrential rain. The forecast is for nice weather for the next two days. I hope they’ve got it right.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. I love the colour pink in the skies – whether it’s during sunrise or sunset. Your photos in today’s post are particularly beautiful – the ‘rainbow’ colours in the clouds and around the sun are special … it was definitely a good day to be in front of the window (and outside)!
