An evening outing?

0922/1st September 2025

After a promising start, Labor Day turned indifferent, the sky a solid, dull grey.

It was the kind of day that makes me feel hemmed in, oppressed.

.

The onset of Fall usually fills me with cheer. This year it feels brown.

Possibly failing eyesight. Or maybe it has to do with our government.

.

At least the sunflowers are cheerful.

The arrival this morning of the bill for a hefty school tax did nothing to improve my mood.

After all, I am a childless cat-lady.

At any rate, I was less than enthused to hear, after supper last night:

“We should go to Bennington!”

.

“You what?”

Going anywhere after noon takes motivation. After supper?

Now that Grant has taken control of what we jokingly call the garden, he needs equipment. One of the items we inherited with the house can no longer be resuscitated and a replacement was available in the Labor Day sale, he’d just discovered.

.

Nature is such an artiste.

There was no need for me to go, of course, but these impromptu trips are often productive, so muttering to Willow that we’d be back soon, I followed the man out.

.

Purchases soon in hand, we turned for home and as the Sun began to sink, the monotonous grey overhead began to break up.

.

The evening sky often calls me out, so I can’t make the excuse that I am unfamiliar with photographing it, though it is true that I am not usually on the road at such times.

Apparently, I need very much more practice.

.

Even when we pulled over and I got out, I had trouble with the focus.

.

Maybe there was just too little light.

.

The colour at least is accurate.

Not a stunning sunset, but nice to see after the long grey hours.

.

We arrived home as the last rays dimmed.

.

Surprising a fawn that was taking a late snack in the field.

Unbothered, it went back to grazing as we drove on.

.

“They’re back!”

Little Man had been watching out for us.

  1. Glad to hear and see that the after dinner trip proved to be fruitful. I cannot remember the last time we left the house after dinner. By that time we are usually fixed solidly to the sofa, and checking how soon we can reasonably go to bed. (We eat dinner at 7pm)
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Thank you, Carolyn, for the beautiful photos of the sky, still interesting even on a dull day. It is so good to have friends waiting for your return, especially when they are all cute!

  3. Little Man says ” something is up! The humans have changed their routine! Should we be worried?”……..

  4. I love that single sunflower photo – really dramatic (and beautiful). I have seen the most beautiful sunsets while we were driving. I think you did very well by ending a grey day with colour. And how nice is it to have a welcoming party at home waiting for you (even if they look slightly dissatisfied).

  5. I think the issue wight be two fold: too little light and too much haze. Sometimes using a tripod helps but then again, one has to deal with a tripod. All that aside, this was a marvellous post. I hope more color enters your view soon. As Tu Fu might say, even would be mighty governments eventually pass into plant covered ruins, usually sooner than later; nature always wins.

    1. I am encouraged to use a tripod but I don’t get on with the thing, just as I do not with umbrellas. They get lost or poke people. I prefer to get wet! And yes, all governments fall but humans never seem to learn.
