Big little shoes

.

A red-winged blackbird singing its heart out on a stalk of last year’s milkweed.

Red-wings are in the majority this year. We see and hear them everywhere.

.

At the end of the road, I got out of the car and tried to determine a good angle from which to photograph the flowering trees, but the results were not satisfactory.

They deserve better.

For a few short days they are so pretty,

.

Over 6 years, the white trees have doubled in size while

the pink one has remained the same.

.

Last night’s surprising sight is worth a mention and the offer of a really bad photograph which was the best I could do…

.

It turns out that groundhogs climb trees, something we never would have imagined if Grant hadn’t spotted it.

Getting closer would have startled the creature, so I did what I could with the telephoto lens.

.

To give you an idea of how far it had climbed, it was about where the arrow points to.

.

Here’s another bad photo.

These are the fox kits we saw while out enjoying that late snow we had some weeks ago.

It was good to catch sight of them and know that they are doing well as we’d been concerned at seeing them by the road with a deceased adult nearby.

They have grown a lot.

.

The foxes behind our garage are much smaller.

During daylight hours, I peer out periodically to see if they are playing and need to be chased under cover.

Although the nightly carnage seems to have stopped, I think it’s best the farmer doesn’t see them.

.

Skunks visit often and because they are easily distinguishable, we know they are numerous.

Occasionally I smell the little dears, when they’ve had an altercation nearby. It is quite pungent.

But they are pretty creatures and amusing to watch.

Recently, a bowl we left on the grass disappeared and we know skunks to be capable thieves!

The puzzle is what they do with their thefts.

.

“I wouldn’t never do nuffink like that.”

Last year the groundhog babies made their first appearance on May 21st and they were an entertaining little family that left big little shoes to fill, if you see what I mean.

Whoever shows up, we’ll be delighted and we’ll enjoy whatever talents they have, or don’t.

  1. Thank you, Carolyn, for the wonderfully uplifting post! I love everything you have presented so beautifully: the meadow with the singing bird, the stunning white and red trees, the cute young foxes, the tree climbing creature, the wildlife that eats for two, the landscapes like paintings, and everything else! I already feel better for reading about your world.

  2. I think the trees covered in blossoms can be taken from any angle and will still be beautiful. Ha, one can only wonder what the skunks are doing with the food bowls – well, one thing is certain, they’re not doing the dishes! Yes, I’m also looking forward seeing groundhog babies – can’t wait for your photos! In the meantime, I enjoy the photos of the foxes.
