Impressed

6th April 2023

Unless rain is actually tipping from the sky, there’s not much that will discourage us from taking a scenic drive.

Yesterday’s excursion offered moody photographs.

A few captions will suffice.

Often, what I perceive brings to mind something else.

One can never escape cables.

A metaphor for the tangled state of things?

Optimism.

An old barn got patched up.

Lake Lauderdale,

Cambridge NY.

.

Grant had travelled this road recently and discovered that some of the cable posts are topped with platforms for the convenience of nesting ospreys. Sure enough….

In a bumping car, my shaking hands and imperfect focus were not equal to capturing a good image, but I was delighted to see the bird.

.

Lots of textures and muted colours

.

Defunct railway. Some of these have been turned into bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways.

.

Clouds were hugging the hill tops as we reached Salem

.

Continuing north…

We all have ups and downs

.

Hebron, NY

Soon after this, we decided to leave the main road…

.

…and found ourselves in a place that defies description.

Try to imagine acres of abandoned, rusting cars, trucks, refrigerators, farm vehicles, mobile homes. Well, some of the mobile homes were not abandoned.

Strewn about in disorder, as if thrown there by a giant child in a temper tantrum. Perhaps it was he who posted the sign which suggested that all of this should be “blamed” on the current administration.

Which part, we wondered? Considering it had obviously been accumulating in this fashion for many years.

.

The vibe was disturbing, so we back-tracked.

At least the goats were having a good time.

.

At the next intersection, we decided to head for the State line.

So we turned east.

.

We stopped briefly to enjoy a babbling brook.

And a breeze playing in the trees.

.

We knew we’d crossed into Vermont by the colour of the road.

Which, in my mind said:

“Follow me through the woods…”

.

“…from the darkness into the light.”

I am very impressionable.

Come back tomorrow for more fascinating impressions and imperfect photography.

  1. I greatly enjoy your road trips! In my area (Prescott, AZ) we have a rails to trails theme where unused railroad right of ways have been converted to hiking trails too.

  2. Suddenly you see so many different colours of green everywhere in your photos … it seems to me that Nature is waking up after winter. My grandmother always used to say: “A goat is an animal that will climb on anything and everywhere.” And it seems to me the goats in your area are no different 😉. Some lovely backroads – I like the babbling river.

  3. Nice to see them putting up nesting areas for Ospreys.
I hate it when people litter the countryside with abandoned vehicles and other junk. And trying to blame that on any government is a lame excuse.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. They are just total slobs and it is obscene to trash land that is so particularly beautiful. That was the worst I have seen, but it’s quite common. Gets my hackles up.
