The lame and the lost

It was March 24th when the trail-cam first picked up the image of a squirrel that looked decidedly wonky.

The very next day, I saw the same strange movement go past the window as I was riding the exercise bike.

Enter Gimpy. I should know better than to let these creatures into my heart.

Our last sighting of Gimpy was May 15th

One can only guess what happened to him.

Mrs Plod didn’t arrive until June 21st.

I can’t post the picture which best shows her condition on that day, because it is too upsetting. My heart went out, once again, to see a creature so distressed.

She came, around the time we were visited briefly by a Baltimore Oriole.

And when he didn’t stay long enough to eat the oranges I sent Grant for, Mrs Plod got them.

She came by last night, just as the sun was setting, so it was hard to get a good photo of her, but I think you can see that she is doing a lot better.

Her bones no longer protrude and her hair has grown in.

We think she is an old lady, but late one night I saw her with another old possum, so she is not alone.

Will they survive another Winter?

Who can say.

July 6th we noticed another “”wonky squirrel, but this was not Gimpy. This one got called “Stiff”, because he couldn’t seem to sit the way most squirrels do.

He was around for a few days, then he must have moved on.

We had been seeing families of raccoons for a while.

Then on Jul 22nd, this little chap turned up.

All by himself. With a very sore foot.

.

Two days later, this little mite arrived, with a sore foot too, and a very sore ear. It seems to have been bitten by another animal.

Grant named them Laurel and Hardy.

They have teamed up. Their feet seem to have recovered, but the ear is still sore. Grant thinks it will get better.

We have no idea why these two guys are alone, but they seem to be managing and they have each other.

Whether Grant is the magnet for injured animals or whether it’s me, I wouldn’t like to say. Yesterday there was a really sad story, but not one I could photograph. Grant went down to the village while I was taking pictures in the driveway.

As I walked back up, I saw something bright red in front of the garage. I didn’t really want to look, but of course I had to. It seems that I have mice in my car again, and one must have fallen out as Grant backed out.

Now it’s an ex-mouse :(.

Why do mice love my car so much? I have left them a lovely pair of shoes in the garage and other stuff. My shoes didn’t stink that bad! In Washington I had the same thing happen, and it became a real problem when a mummy mouse had her babies in the engine 🙁 🙁 Talking of stinks….

I didn’t want Grant to see his victim, so I scooped it up and took it way down the field where some other creature could benefit from an easy meal. Such is life.

We had a great sunset last night:

  1. Love those little wild fuzzy critters….they all seem to struggle so during the summer months…so thankful and glad you are helping them along during this season of their lives…
